Change to audio shortcode?
-
Today looking back at an old post, I discovered that an audio link I put in with the audio shortcode was broken. The url showed up, not the audio player.
Checking the support page for audio, it appears that the shortcode format is now:
[audio http://url.url.url%5D
At some time in the past it was
[audio=”http://url.url.url”]
This older way it works appears now to be deprecated. That was an unfortunate choice, as it broke the audio links throughout my blog. I searched through my blog and converted the audio shortcodes to follow the current syntax (fortunately, it was just a handful of posts), but I’m betting that a lot of other people are finding their old posts with audio shortcodes to be broken too.
Could this deprecation of the old syntax have happened by mistake?

When I started using the audio shortcode, I looked up how and the syntax I found was [audio=”url”], so that’s what I did. Today when I looked it up, it shows as [audio url]. See this page:
Today I discovered that the old format, [audio=”url”] no longer works.

Ah, ok, I understand now.
But the code[audio https://....mp3]works fine for me too.
I tagged this thread with modlook for Staff Assistace.
Be patient while waiting. -
Hi @jimgrey can you show me an example of a post where that syntax is not working?
I’m able to play this lovely audio here, for example:
-
Oh how interesting. That one is using a third variation of the shortcode, [audio=url].
If I change it to [audio=”url”] it promptly breaks. Try it yourself!
-
But here’s my overall point: at one time, [audio=”url”] worked, and now it doesn’t. This is not the syntax currently described in the Support pages, so it is at most a legacy syntax, which probably got deprecated or broken somewhere along the way. I have fixed my audio embeds throughout my site, but (and here’s the crux) there may be other people who used that syntax years ago who have broken audio embeds and don’t know it.
-
I appreciate that you’re continuing to look into this!
Unfortunately, this is only something I’ve noticed recently, on the day I opened this thread. I happened upon an old post with an audio embed and found it broken. I don’t know when it broke. :-(
-
@jimgrey alright. We weren’t able to find the cause. We did notice our shortcode docs (at least for the past few years) call for no-quotes, but it’s possible they were working at some point anyway.
For now, I’ve gone ahead and fixed all of the posts with the quotes in the audio shortcode. I hope that helps :)

Can you do that for me, @supernovia?
Examples:

etc.

@supernovia – My gosh, thanks for fixing it for me throughout my site! What an unexpected bit of grace.

You seem to have a lot of other shortcode options appended there.
My guess is that some of them are not supported.
Maybe you’re right Velda.

Hmm, yeah I’m not familiar with most of those.
I noticed you got the two examples working — did you need more help?
-
Hi, Velda.
Don’t worry, I changed all the shortcodes & erased all the extra tags.Cheers. :)
