Change to entirely new domain name

We have changed our name from Arizona Press Women to Arizona Professional Writers. Our domain name is the former. We would like to change it to the new name. Did we get our domain thru you? Can we purchase the new name (arizonaprofessionalwriters.org) and then 1) migrate the old pages to the new site (easily) and 2) have the original site forward to the new one?

Yes you registered that URL through WordPress.com. No you do not need to move any content. Staff can remove the URL being mapped to and replace it with another URL. First you need to purchase arizonaprofessionalwriters.org via a domain mapping upgrade.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Know that getting a first response to any support request on any blogging support forum tends to take at least 12 to 24 hours and can take longer. However, because I choose to spend so much time answering questions here the response time is usually quicker than the norm.

As Timethief mentioned, this should be a fairly painless transition. The easiest way to do this would be the following:
- Have the owner (or whoever you would like to purchase the new domain) follow these steps to register arizonaprofessionalwriters.org at arizonapresswomen.wordpress.com:
- Once the new domain is registered, select it as the primary domain here:
https://arizonapresswomen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
This way, arizonapresswomen.com will automatically reroute to arizonaprofessionalwriters.org
- When arizonapresswomen.com is closer to the expiration date (2 days out), you can cancel that domain from your Upgrades page here:
https://arizonapresswomen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
This will need to be done by the owner of the upgrade. This way, you’ll only have one domain on the blog moving forward.
