Change to wordpress and change my domain over also.
-
I am an artist and I have a website hosted by moonfruit. The renewal for this annual hosting is coming up at the beginning of May. Also, I would like to change the domain name of my website and ensure that anyone who goes to my old address would be reverted back to my new domain name. As an artist I am constantly applying for opportunities and I need to figure out how to ensure a smooth changeover.
I was thinking of setting up a plan with wordpress, changing my current domain name to be with wordpress and then from there redirect traffic to my new address? Would really appreciate your insights with this, thank you.

Hi –
Thanks for getting in touch. We can help you through this process. Can you share the current site URL with me? I’d just like to take a look at what you have set up, the functions you’ll need in a new site, the theme, stuff like that…
My advice is to keep your domain where it is for the time being. Don’t take down your new site, or move the domain over, until you are set up and ready to go on WordPress.com.
You can build your new site on the free address that you have listed in this thread. If you need to upgrade for different features to a paid plan, you can still do that with the free site address. We have a privacy setting that allows you to hide the site entirely from the internet until it’s ready.
Once your site is ready to go live, connect the domain. There are 2 options.
1. Map it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. Transfer it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/I’d wait and do this at a non busy time. The mapping typically works pretty quick, but there are cases, where it can take up to 72 hours for the name server changes to get fully activated across the globe. Typically it’s much quicker than that. With a domain transfer, it will take 5 days. There’s no way to speed that up, but, the benefit would be all of your site related things are in one place (WordPress.com) and it all renews 1x per year, etc.. There’s not a wrong option, neither is permanent.
Write back with more questions :)
