Change URL

  Our group recently changed our name and would like the url to reflect the change; we’ve updated the website with the new name. Is it possible to change the URL or do we need to start with a new website altogether?

  You cannot edit any URL. If you want to change the blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so then you can change the URL by using this guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

  re: purchasing your own domain
  In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase.

  As you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog. See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

  Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

  May I pigtail on this conversation? I believe I’ve followed all the directions to migrate at this point, my DNS has been updated. I’m hoping I’ve understood this process correctly – when the propogation is complete and someone types in my address of http://www.blackhillsreiki.com – they will then see my blog (currently blackhillsreiki.wordpress.com)? Right now, when I select to make my website the main, even my blog directs you there….except all you see if my horrible first attempt at a website – which is why I want to combine this.

  So – should if I wait to select the blackhillsreiki.com as the main page, can people see my blog? Or should I wait a day and try it then after everything has time to do what it needs to do. I got confirmation from my web hosting company this morning that the transition was complete.

  Sorry, I am worried I’ve gotten myself completely backwards on this process!

  That is not the Change URL thing. That is the CUstom Domain thing, and it appears to be working fine. It goes to your WP.com blog.

  Thanks everyone. We don’t have a domain name, just using wordpress. I think I can get the original creator to edit the name before .wordpress.com.
