Change URL of site for Personal plan at wordpress.com without losing the traffic

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I had a free wordpress.com (not org) blog. I have purchased the Personal plan, choosing a new name for my blog xxx.com.
However, now I would now like to change the URL from xxx.com to yyy.com.
I was thinking to buy the new domain from godaddy, but I need to know what are the steps to do after that, inside the wordpress.com account so that my blog points to the new address and that I don’t lose the traffic that I have until this point.

Please advise, thank you in advance.

    Hello @xhibeo,
If you purchase a domain via outside sources like godaddy, you can map that domain to your wordpress.com blog by following the instructions given here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

    Hope this helps :)

    Hello, thank you.
1.What does it mean “You can map as many additional domains to the same site as you would like, but you have to pay for additional mapping upgrades separately.”
What upgrades do I have to pay separately?
    2. If i purchase it through wordpress again, do I still have to ask to update any nds? Like I need to do with the new registrar provider?

    Thank you!

It means that you can map only one domain registered via external sources per upgrade. For mapping more external domains you will have to pay more.

No, if you buy your domain via WordPress.com you don’t have to update any DNS records or values it is automatically connected to your WordPress.com blog/site.

You can read more about registering a domain via WordPress.com here:

    Hello

Thank you for the links and for your help so far.
Please check my new questions below.

    1. In this link you provided
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/
it is indicated at step 10 that:
“Your blog will be accessible from all of these domains; the Primary Domain is what actually appears as your domain within the address bar of web browsers. If you do not see your blog at the new domain immediately, please allow some time for the DNS changes to propagate”
This means that, for a Personal plan where I already have the domains: xxx.wordpress.com and xxx.com, after adding the new domain yyy.com that is purchased from wordpress, all the 3 adresses will redirect to yyy.com?

    2. if I purchase the new domain yyy.com from wordpress.com, will I lose the SEO/traffic gained so far, by adding the new yyy.com domain and making it primary?

    3. if I purchase the new domain through another registrar and map the new domain, will the 3 addresses point to the new domain yyy.com and what about the SEO/traffic? will I lose what was gained so far?

    Thank you in advance

    Hello,

Do you have any update for me for the 3 questions above?
    Thank you

@xhibeo apologies for the delay in my response.

    1. In this link you provided

No, that step simply indicates that if you want your visitors to view your new address yyy.com on their address bar even if they visit the site via xxx.wordpress.com or xxx.com, then you have to set this new domain as your primary domain.

    2. if I purchase the new domain yyy.com from wordpress.com, will I lose the SEO/traffic gained so far, by adding the new yyy.com domain and making it primary?

You wont loose the SEO as long as your old domains redirect to yyy.com

    3. if I purchase the new domain through another registrar and map the new domain, will the 3 addresses point to the new domain yyy.com and what about the SEO/traffic? will I lose what was gained so far?

They wont point to the new domain automatically you have to set the new domain yyy.com as your primary domain so that the old domains redirect to yyy.com by following this official guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#setting-the-primary-domain

And as i mentioned in the second question, you wont loose the SEO as long as the old domains point/redirect to the new domain.

    Hope these help 🙂
