  What is your website address that you’re currently working on?

  Are you an administrator for the website that you were trying to change the username on?

  @chatnaa you will need to choose a username that’s available to be able to change it. Also note that once you’ve changed the username, you will not be able to use the old name ever again:

  https://wordpress.com/support/change-your-username/

  
  @obt28, on WordPress.com the username has nothing to do with the site’s address. In fact, you can have an account without ever creating a site.
