Change your site address error
-
Hi, Support Team,
This is Alex.
I am trying to change my blog’s domain in the ‘Change your site address’ window in the WordPress app on a MacBook.
I keep getting this error message:
Oops! Sorry an error has occurred. Please click here to contact us so that we can fix it.
The domain I am looking for is available, but the ‘Change site address’ button is disabled because of an error.
If you could fix it, I’d appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I meant the site address, not the domain. The domain remains wordpress.com.
It’s the yoursite part in yoursite.wordpress.com that I’m trying to change. But an error prevents me from doing that. As explained above.
Thx.

Hi there!
You mentioned you tried changing it ‘on the WordPress app on MacBook.’
Just to confirm, have you tried it on a web browser (like Safari, Firefox, or Chrome)?
If you’re still unable to follow these instructions to change your site address using a web browser, can you please take a screenshot of the error you see and reply with that so that we can investigate further?
Thanks!

Definitely followed those instructions. Also tried in Chrome and Firefox. Same error and behavior as in the app.
Here’s a screenshot from Chrome, for example:

I don’t know if it helps, of if they are related, but also, if I try to Add new site, it gives an error like this:

Hey there,
Many thanks for those screenshots – this is something we’re aware of, and looking to fix.
This is a relatively new bug, first reported in the last the week or so.
In the meantime, it’s currently not possible to change the site address. Out of curiosity, are you looking to use a domain with the site at any point? The reason why I ask is because, if yes, this site address wouldn’t be visible.
Many thanks.

Thanks both, aleone89 and aisajib for looking into this.
1. “are you looking to use a domain with the site at any point” – Possibly in the future, but certainly not for now. I know what you mean with the address visibility.
2. “This is a relatively new bug” – I don’t know if it helps, but here’s a little story about this. This error has quite a long history for me, definitely more than a week.
More than a year ago I tried to change the site’s address and I got the very same errors as in the screenshots above. I was caught in some other projects, so I didn’t really care at the time that it doesn’t work. But now I finally got the time to take care of this project and I hoped it would work. Unfortunately for no avail.
At some point I thought that the error may be related to my WordPress account rather than to the blog itself. And it might be related to the error below:
3. Can you at least fix this error? Not being able to create a new blog from my WordPress account (second screenshot above). Because I’d like to add a new blog as well, on a different topic.
Thanks again for your support.
PS: I numbered the ideas above, so they are easier to follow through.

Thanks for clarifying. At the moment our team is still investigating since we’ve seen a few specific reports of this issue. Until we have an update on that it’s difficult for us to look further into your past issues with renaming the free “wordpress.com” internal address.
Can you at least fix this error? Not being able to create a new blog from my WordPress account (second screenshot above). Because I’d like to add a new blog as well, on a different topic.
For the moment this seems to be related to the same underlying issue, so we do not have a workaround I’m afraid. We’re happy to update you here as soon as we have updated info.
Thanks for your patience!
