Changed domain name and it created a mess

    I’ve been researching this and trying to not panic. I’m a newbie. I have an account on Bluehost with a domain like http://www.domain.net . I decided to try and build it on my local pc with a local wordpress account. On this account I created it as domaindraft.local . Everything was fine until I thought I would sync the two and tried to change the domains to match on my local dashboard. I changed it to domain.local. Of course this locked me out of the dashboard. I followed directions and modified the wp-conf.php file and added:
    define(‘WP_HOME’, ‘http://domaindraft.local’);
    define(‘WP_SITEURL’, ‘http://domaindraft.local’);

    Now I can access the dashboard, but all the links are broken and I’d like to change the domain to match what’s on bluehost- ie domain.local

    Locally I don’t have access to cPanel. How do I fix this? Also, assuming I get it repaired, what are the steps to exporting the completed site to bluehost? Thanks in advance for any help.
    James

  • Hi James! Your local installation probably runs HTTP on another port, so that address alone wouldn’t cut it unless you’ve set up your local server that way.

    Also, I’ll be frank: you’re posting in the forums for free sites hosted by WordPress.com, and while I used to use localhost setups before I worked here, it’s been quite a while since then. And even then, there were quite a few different methods for staging sites locally and getting them transferred to the live host.

    So you might have better luck in the forums for the free WordPress software, at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    Here’s the difference between that and our hosting services:

    And here’s a topic where someone asked something quite similar; perhaps this answer will help:

    Hoping it helps, and all the best with your new site launch!

    Thanks. There’s an ocean of information that I’m learning trying to create my first website, so I appreciate your patience. I resolved the problem. After pulling my hair out I realized that I could simply open the “Local” app that I’m using. It actually has a simple button to change the domain. I’ll look into the .org site and see if that offers a better method of staging. Thank you again.

  • Oh good, yeah I thought maybe something in the local server app itself might be the key here.

    And I hope that article helps, re: migrating the local site to Bluehost. Cheers!
