Changed permissions per hosting company and have lost blog access
-
I have a WordPress blog via a hosting company, and it is hosted on a Linux server. At one time I needed to upload an htaccess file so I requested root access permissions to make changes via ws-ftp. Once I was given root access persmissions, I could no longer make changes via the WP admin panel so the hosting company told me to manually go and change permissions for the folders where plugins and themes reside to 777 or 755, which should allow WordPress to write to those folders.
Well I attempted to do that today. I logged into my site via ws-ftp, and I selected the main blog folder (wp-content), right clicked for chmod, and for Group and Other on that folder, I checked Write. After making those changes, I no longer have access to this folder even after removing the checks, and my entire blog is down. Below is the error message I get when I click on the blog link.
Warning: is_dir(): Stat failed for /usr/local/pem/vhosts/220325/webspace/siteapps/102198/htdocs/wp-content/mu-plugins (errno=13 – Permission denied) in /usr/local/pem/vhosts/220325/webspace/siteapps/102198/htdocs/wp-includes/load.php on line 426
I can login to the admin panel, and I see my posts, but nothing else is there. Basically the access to the wp-content folder has been blocked. The only solution the hosting company is telling me is to reload the blog which of course will cause me to lose everything. I also signed up for a WP account and tried to upload the WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR just to see if I could save my posts, and of course this is not working either.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, you need to head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that is where self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG are supported.
These forums are for those hosted here on the wordpress.COM free hosting service and things here work differently.
If you do not know the difference, see this support document: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ .

One other note. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER set any folder to 777. It opens that folder to the entire world and all the hackers therein.
