changed primary domain name

HELP! I just changed my primary domain name and now my links posted on twitter don’t work. I thought that the links would still work and that my old domain name would redirect to my new domain name. How can I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please post both URLs here and be clear about what you are trying to do.
Why did you change the primary domain URL?

Now, when I click on the links of my blog posts that I (and others) shared on twitter before I made the change, it says the page cannot be found. My friend who made the same changes a while ago doesn’t have this problem… the old links simply redirect to the right URL. (She has paid to upgrade though)

  • Hi there,

Changing the site address moves all your content from one URL to a brand new URL, and leaves an empty site at the old URL. Links to the old URL will no longer work, as the content is no longer on that site. An address change like this cannot be reversed, but you can manually export your content and import it back to the old address if you want to use that address instead.

There is no automatic redirect for changing the free address. The only time we automatically redirect is if you add a custom domain, not change the free domain. That is probably what your friend did. If you want the old address to redirect to the new address, you’ll need to buy the Site Redirect upgrade for the old site.

Thank you! So I’ve now paid the $17 to have my old URL redirect to my new URL. If in the future I want to upgrade to a paid version (therefor deleting the WordPress section of my URL) will I also have to continue paying the $17/year to redirect?

  • If you buy a plan for annickrauch.wordpress.com and add a custom domain, you’ll still need to redirect innovationin1stgrade.wordpress.com if you want it to continue working, yes.

But annickrauch.wordpress.com will be redirected to the custom domain automatically – that’s included in the domain upgrade.
