Changed Themes, Only 3 Widgets Appear??
-
I have about 8 or 9 widgets that I use regularly, but when I changed themes (I tried Ocadia and Albeo) only Text, Category Cloud & Blogroll appear. When I click on the widget link in “Appearance”, there’s no option to “Add” the other widgets I typically use. It’s like they are activated already but aren’t appearing in my list of used widgets nor do they appear on my page.
-
Switch to the old theme, remove all widgets, save changes, then switch back to the new one and add the ones you want.
And be careful with the text widgets: depending on the pair of themes, you may loose them when you switch, so first copy their content and paste it in a simple text editor.

The solution I used was to goto the drop down box in the widgets section and select “unused widgets” this should show all your old widgets. also one time when I switched themes, all I did was add a widget and saved changes then after the screen reloaded, all my old widgets popped up.

Not all themes are widget-enabled. Some have the widgets hardcoded into the theme and there’s nothing you can do about them.

I have been alternating between various themes, to see which one would work for me. At some point in the switching back and forth, I lost those three widgets and they have never been available again.
Misty Look does have Search. Or at least it did when I was originally used it 2 months ago.
I tried switching the drop-down boxes and the option to add Search never appears.

@vanjoygree: I’m quite familiar with what you’re describing, because as a volunteer in the forum I often switch themes to check various things. My original post here still applies, I’m afraid: you’ll have to load each theme you’ve tried, find out which one has added widgets and remove them.
As for the Search box, some themes (including Misty Look) have it as a built-in feature, not as a widget you add.

Agree with panaghiotisadam.
I started a new blog and tried out 3 different themes. Added all the widgets it offered in the first theme. Then changed to 2 other themes. Only the default widgets showed in those and all the 22 other widgets disappeared – it could not be added, edited or removed. My problem was only solved when swithing back to the initial theme where I added the widgets, removing all of them, and then choosing a new theme. -
@slic306163: That’s an unfortunate new situation with 2.7. Before that, all it took was adding any widget and/or clicking Save Changes.

Thanks everyone for this information. I have learned alot from posts like these in the three days since I decided to look into blogging. I spent hours changing themes trying to get the things I wanted to appear on my page. Now since reading this, I just added them onto the theme I had. I’m feeling much better now. -Vickie

thanks much. i luckily recalled the previous theme i was playing with and was able to delete and reinstall links. BUT I was really glad i copied all the info from the widgets before i changed themes, so i could just copy and paste it back when i reinstalled them.

I want to thank all you guys for the info. I practically tore through my blog wondering why certain widgets didn’t show after installing the Tarski theme. So it turns out that there’s a bug in WP2.7 which causes this.
I’m very sure I’ll get a good night’s sleep tonight!

You’re most welcome, but note two things: a) the bug was recently fixed, b) this is wp.COM while your new blog is self-hosted, so the info here doesn’t necessarily apply in your case: different software.

panaghiotisadam, was the bug fixed in WordPress.org 2.7 too? As I’ve said, my custom widgets just refused to display themselves in other themes, except for Tarski. This is what I did to solve the problem (again, bear in mind I’m using WordPress.org):
1. I activated the Tarski theme, and then went to the widgets page.
2. I deleted every custom widget. Of course I copied the codes for the widgets before deleting them.
3. Once I had done this, the deleted widgets appeared on the left side, which meant that I could add them to other themes.I hope this will help others having similar problems.

I found the bug —
In the wp_options table, look for a row with the option_name: “sidebar_widgets”
mine looks like this:
a:3:{s:9:"sidebar-1";a:0:{}s:9:"sidebar-2";a:3:{i:0;s:14:"text-366307882";i:1;s:5:"pages";i:2;s:20:"categories-366307881";}s:13:"array_version";i:3;}If you’re not familiar with JSON format this won’t make much sense.
Basically what happened is that when we backed up the data from my wife’s old blag, it included her widget settings (and other stuff from the options table). She USED to use two sidebars, but now only uses one. These three widgets were on her old Sidebar2, and so wordpress doesn’t know where to put them, but it knows they’re being used.
Anyways —
The solution is to simply delete that one row. If you are not a Database Pirate / SQL Ninja, I recommend finding someone that *IS* and having them do it.
If your host does not allow you to directly access your databases (some do, some don’t) you can just try enabling a theme with 2 widgeted sidebars, delete them from sidebar 2, and then go back to the theme you want, and everything should be in there.

Ummm, I can’t get any widgets to display at all now. I can’t remember the themes I’ve tried in the last few weeks how can I fix this?
