Changed URL, locked out

  • Unknown's avatar

I transferred my domain to a Squarespace site today and thought I could change my WordPress address manually in WP Admin. Now I’m locked out.

Do I have to have access to some FTP? I’d like to just have my site returned to the default ***.wordpress.com address but I’m at a loss at this point.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi 4artadnadventure,

Please share the link to the website you want help with.

    The link was originally 4artandadventure.com
It was (incorrectly) changed to dionneharoutunian.com

As you have already mentioned, you use Squarespace, but let me clear that WordPress and Squarespace are two platforms, and you can’t manage a Squarespace website through a WP-Admin panel.

You should contact the Squarespace customer support to resolve this issue.

Hi there, what is that WordPressdotcom address? if you haven’t deleted your WordPressdotcom website, you can make your ***.wordpress.com address primary when you go to your domains dashboard on WordPressdotcom. https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/

At the moment, when I try to access 4artandadventure.com (which is also using Squarespace nameservers) it redirects me to dionneharoutunian.com which is hosted on Squarespace.

It looks like both 4artandadventure.com and dionneharoutunian.com are registered with tucows, then you must have only mapped it here.

    I believe it was 4artandadventure.wordpress.com

I’m unable to access my domains dashboard because I’m locked out, so unable to make that my primary. Would it be possible to transfer dionneharoutunian.com to WordPress? What would be the best way to access this WordPress site again?

    Hi 4artadnadventure,

4artandadventure.com was registered in 2015 but has never been used for a site hosted by WordPress.com — the domain was pointing to a WordPress.org site hosted by SiteGround instead. We have some information about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    I believe it was 4artandadventure.wordpress.com

4artandadventure.wordpress.com does not exist so it wouldn’t have been possible to use the domain for that site.

The Jetpack plugin created a connection between 4artandadventure.com and your WordPress.com account — this why you were able to edit and manage the site through your account here.

What would be the best way to access this WordPress site again?

You will need to contact your host for advice about accessing content that was on 4artandadventure.com before the domain was changed.

Would it be possible to transfer dionneharoutunian.com to WordPress?

Would you like to use dionneharoutunian.com for a site hosted on WordPress.com? Or would you prefer to continue using it for your existing WordPress.org site hosted elsewhere?

Just let me know and we can go from there.

I’m not certain what’s the best approach here. Let me mark this for Staff.

Updated to note that @gemmacevans reply was caught in our spam filter. A first, I think!

Okay, thank you so much for looking into this! I’ll await your response — once I know what my options are I’ll let you know how I’d like to proceed.

    @gemmacevans Thanks for explaining WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Ideally, I would like to have that content hosted here on WordPress.com now. Would the process involve accessing that content from the previous host, having you set up my account as a WordPress.com site, and uploading that content to that new address?

  • As long as wp-admin is accessible, you can use these steps to import it:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/coming-from-self-hosted/

Let’s see if we can unravel how to get back there, though.

First: I noticed you pointed 4artandadventure.com to Squarespace only yesterday. Can you change that so it points back to SiteGround? And then, can you ask SiteGround to help you manually update the site address so it’s 4artandadventure.com again for now? That will at least let you get to the point where you can export content if you want to.

Just note the change that points from Squarespace back to SiteGround can take several hours to take effect, AND you will need SiteGround’s help, or you can use these one of these options to manually fix your site on your own. Again, this will only work once 4artandadventure.com starts working with SiteGround again.

Next: confirm what you’d like to do with dionneharoutunian.com. Right now it has an existing site at Squarespace. Did you want to get rid of it and show the contents of your other site instead? Or, did you want to somehow keep the SquareSpace site, and the WordPress installation, but use the same domain for both?

Once you’ve fixed the old site so you can export as needed, and clarified what you want to do with the other site, we’ll go from there.

    Thanks for the help, @supernovia!

As long as wp-admin is accessible,

    Unfortunately, it’s not.

I’m not terribly concerned about the domain right now (so neither 4artandadventure.com nor dionneharoutunian.com are necessary at the moment and I prefer to just keep them as they are at Squarespace).

I’ve generated and downloaded a full backup of my site from SiteGround. So I’d just like to upload my site onto WordPress.com in the most convenient way so that I have access to it. Is it as simple as just importing my backup folder as a new WordPress site?

I look forward to hearing from you on how to proceed and, once again, thanks for all of the help here!

  • Is it as simple as just importing my backup folder as a new WordPress site?

Unfortunately not – that backup folder cannot be imported to a WordPress.com site at all.

To import content from another site to WordPress.com, you need the WordPress export file, and that can only be obtained from Tools ->Export in WP-Admin.

So you will need to first reconnect the Siteground site to a domain so you can access it to export the content. Also note that in order for image files to import correctly to WordPress.com the site needs to be online at the same domain as it was when you exported the content, else we’re not able to fetch the media files referenced in your posts – a WordPress export file does not contain the images themselves, only links to where they are hosted in the media library, and are only transferred at the point that you do the import.
