Changed Username Lost 2GB Media Storage
-
Hi, I have had a blog here for about 6 months, but I had an operation and didn’t use the blog in that time. Now I have recovered, and I decided to change my Username and also have a blog to match the new Username, but now I have lost the 3GB media storage that I had, and now have only 1GB. I know that wordpress have changed the media storage (to force people to pay, because there is an “upgrade” link right next to it) for new accounts, but it seems a bit unfair that I have lost 2GB of storage, when I was only changing the Username and blog, rather than it being a brand new account. Can I have my 2GB back please?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I’m not sure I understand. Normally when you change the address of your site, the old site is removed from your account.
But I can confirm that https://ferasden.wordpress.com/ is still listed as a site under your account, and has not been renamed. You can see that here: https://wordpress.com/sites/
As well, I can confirm from our activity logs that the site artwhistles.wordpress.com appears to be a newly created site (not an older site that was renamed) so it correctly shows the new storage limit that applies to new sites that are created under your account.
We do not have a way to expand the storage space on newly created sites, but if you wish you can continue to use ferasden.wordpress.com to store your media and then use the image URL from ferasden.wordpress.com to embed content on your new site.

It’s not a newly created site, I changed Username and had a blog to match. When you change the Username there is a list of options. I chose to change the Username and have a blog to match, and to keep the previous blog. If I had known that I would lose the storage I wouldn;t have bothered. I don’t want to use the previous blog. If I wanted to do that I wouldn’t have changed the Username and another blog. Never mind I will just delete both blogs and go to Blogger.

I think it’s awful that this happened to the other person here, and I want to do what he did and change my username and blog url, but I dont want to make the same mistake and lose my media storage. He is correct because there IS a drop down list of options for us to choose from, when changing a username and I don’t know which one to select where I would be able to keep the 3GB storage that I have. If I change my username do I lose my media storage like this person did, no matter what option I select from the drop down? How is it even fair when just changing username with an account that is not new, that you are classed as “new” and therefore lose 2GB of your storage?

Howdy @lettersfromthemarge
I was just coming back here to let
artwhistlesknow that we are looking into that issue, but is seems that I am a bit too late. Were you considering changing your username as well? If so you are welcome to do that now, and give your site a new address as a separate step.
We’re still investigating, so I would avoid creating a new site using the check boxes there for now. If you change your site address separately from changing your username however, you will not run into any issues.
If you had something else in mind let us know and we’re happy to take a closer look before you make any changes, thanks!

Yes I wanted to change my username and have the matching blog URL, but I found this thread and wanted to check as I didn’t want to make a mistake with ticking the wrong box in drop down. So are you saying that I WON’T lose my media storage like artwhistles did? I won’t change it if it means I lose that.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. Let me do a little bit of testing here on another account I have, and I will report back so that you have a safe path to do that, thanks!

Hi @lettersfromthemarge
At this stage I would recommend that you change your username first, but choose this option:
– No, don’t create a matching blog address
Once you have done that, you can then change your site address to match by following the steps here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-site-address/
A site address that is changed separately (as described in the link above) does retain the legacy features of the free plan and will include 3GB of storage as expected.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for taking the time to check it all for me. This is my wifes blog and I am taking it over so that’s why I want to change the name, and as it will be a photo blog I want to keep the 3GB storage. I will do exactly as you have said and hope it all goes well but if not I will let you know and hope it can be fixed if it does go wrong. Thank you for helping me.

I have already hit a problem. I changed my username easily enough, but the link you gave to change site address shows a different layout. For instance the linked page shows “change site address” but my options are shown as “add a domain to a new site”, “add a domain to a different site” and “add a domain without a site”. I don’t think I should click any of them should I?

Will a link work because my blog is private? I have a screen shot of what I see when I do as the link you gave says. You will be able to see how different it is on my page Screenshot

Hi there,
I tried this on my end and it seems that the steps from the article do apply, so I’m not sure why you are seeing different.
Please go to https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/lettersfromthemarge.wordpress.com
Then do as you see here in this video I recorded: https://d.pr/v/WgrT0r
This should work and retain the legacy storage limit but under a new site address. If that does not work for any reason let us know!

i have figured it out now. sorry I was clicking on the wrong 3 dots! I was clicking the ones at the top of the page rather than the ones next to “primary site address” lower down. I can confirm that I still have the 3GB media storage. Thank you for all your help with this.
