Changes I make to my site don't show on the site
-
My site http://www.jenny-sherman.com is hosted through GoDaddy and has a purchased theme of Photography by The Theme Foundry. I recently went to make some edits to the site, and when I tried to take photos out of existing galleries, they remained on the site (I renewed the cache several times and even re-started the browser). The changes save in the edit panel, but even when I go to “preview changes” the changes don’t update. I also attempted to remove a slideshow from my homepage, to no success. I have attempted this in both Firefox and Safari.
Also, unrelated, I would like to customize my site’s permalinks so that the posts don’t show the date in the browser link. The Support Forum tells me to go to either Options > permalink or Settings > permalink depending on my version, but when I go to either Option or Settings, there is no “Permalink” choice to select. Do I have a wonky version?

I checked http://jenny-sherman.com/ just now and it is currently hosted here at WordPress.com, not GoDaddy. It looks to me like you used GoDaddy for the domain name registration (the name only) and not hosting. But! what you described about editing and not having the changes reflect on the site kind of sounds like you might have setup two completely separate web hosting accounts and you’re editing one that is not currently connected to the jenny-sherman.com domain (which would explain what you described).
To try to sort that out first, can you please tell me the exact URL of the dashboard link you used to make your edits (it should have “wp-admin” somewhere in the link)?
The dashboard link for editing the http://jenny-sherman.com/ site as it’s currently setup, with WordPress.com as the host, you would use this admin link:

I’m sorry but WordPress.com does not offer custom permalinks as an option. You could use custom permalinks with a self-hosted WordPress.org install though.
The more you explain, the more it does sound like you’ve setup to separate WordPress instances and are confusing the two of them. First let’s figure out what you’ve done so far and then we can go from there.

Ok, so that shows how much I know about what is happening at my site! Thanks for clarifying the hosting/domain thing for me.
My precise URL when I make my edits is: http://e11eventhstar.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php
What’s strange about this is I did make some edits from this dashboard, including taking entire galleries offline, and those went through. Just the smaller, specific edits that I mentioned did not work.
Thanks for letting me know about the permalinks, I’ll look into the link you sent.
Thanks for all your help, please let me know what you think!

That seems like the right link to me. Could you try making a new small edit and then checking to see if it worked? If it doesn’t work, let me know the link to the post you tried editing and I will take a closer look.
If you decide to change to a WordPress.org setup in the end, it might not matter a ton, but I do want to make sure everything here at WordPress.com is working as it should be. :)
If you have further questions about whether to change hosts after you read the link I sent before, please let me know.

Ok so I’ve tried a couple basic things without much success. I tried to create a new gallery of photos: Created a new post, added photos to the gallery, saved it as a media item in the format “Gallery.” Previewing the page gave me this error:
“This gallery has no images. Please upload some images through the Edit page for this post, and your gallery will appear.” (http://jenny-sherman.com/2013/06/22/test-photo/)
If I save it in “Gallery” format, it should also appear in the Gallery menu item page, and it does not.I then tried something simpler: Attempting a test blog was successful (http://jenny-sherman.com/blog/)
I tried again to edit out some photos from a gallery, specifically the one called “Location” (http://jenny-sherman.com/2011/12/09/location/), and it still shows up with some older version of the gallery from long before.
I would prefer to keep WordPress as my host as its less work on my end it seems, but if this is the reason for the problem then I’ll have to get rid of it completely.

Thanks for including specific example links. It looks to me like the Photography theme is setup specifically to use image that are attached to the post and that doesn’t work as well after the latest updates for the WordPress core software happened because they changed the way media and galleries work.
I will post a note for the Photography theme authors to see if they can look into the issue and let us know if anything can be done to update the theme to make galleries work better in Photography theme posts by default.
In the mean time, there are a couple of possible ways for you to work around the problem:
(1) Use a page instead of a post for the gallery, and setup the page to use the “Gallery” page template:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/(2) Switch to a standard post format instead of the gallery post format to bypass the Photography theme galleries and use the WordPress.com built-in galleries instead
Here are some examples of the galleries which are built in for WordPress.com:

Thank you for the suggestions and all of your help.
Will I be notified about any fixes made to the Theme? Also, if there is no fix, who can I contact to possible switch themes/get a refund for the remaining 2 years I purchased?

You can talk to me about that if it’s needed later.
Will I be notified about any fixes made to the Theme?
Someone should post a reply here as soon as the issue is addressed.
In the mean time, there is a way to get the theme’s gallery option to work that I didn’t know about before! What you need to do is attach the images to the post. To do that, follow the same steps as before but make sure to upload new images using the “Add Media” link inside the post during editing. If you don’t upload the images while editing the post directly, the images won’t be attached and won’t show up in the Photography theme gallery.
Can you try it for your http://e11eventhstar.wordpress.com/2013/06/22/test-photo/ test post?
Here is the edit link. Use the “Add Media” button above the edit area at the following link and upload new images even if you have already uploaded them before:
http://e11eventhstar.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=850&action=editAside: the way media works for the core WordPress software changed in the last version update, and that’s why it’s now possible to create a gallery with images not attached to a post—you couldn’t do that before the update and the Photography theme was created based on how WordPress was designed to work before that big media update. The theme authors will update the theme at some point, but the way it used to work still works if you upload the images the way the theme expects and so it’s not an urgent update for them.

Again, I appreciate all your help.
I tried a couple things on the page: http://jenny-sherman.com/2013/06/22/test-photo/
I used the “Add Media” button and selected photos from my ‘Media Gallery’. The first time I added a few photos, one by one, on the ‘Insert Media’ side tab. When I published the page, the photos showed side by side half way down the page.
The second time I tried adding several photos at a time with the ‘Create Gallery’ side tab. When published that didn’t show at all. I saved them both in the template’s format ‘Gallery’ (as opposed to Standard) because that is (was) the way to get the photo post directly linked into the Gallery menu item at the top of my page. This aspect of the template is super important.
I double checked to make sure every setting on the test page matched the current 2 galleries’ settings.
In the meantime of figuring out a solution, I would like to put a place holder page on my home page saying “site under construction.” How do I do that?

There isn’t a way on WordPress.com to change the design completely to say “site under construction” but there are a couple different things you can do.
One thing you could do is make the entire blog private. That will make it so only logged in users with rights to edit that blog can see it, and everyone else would see a note saying the blog was private and a login form. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ to learn how to update the privacy settings.
Another thing you could do would be to create a static front page and just put the text “site under construction” as the only content so at least that would be what people see on the front page if they happen to find the blog.

Hello e11eventhstar,
Photography uses attachments for the gallery shortcode. This means the the galleriess only appears if the images are attached to post marked as a gallery. Attaching them is rather easy. Please try the following:
- From your Dashboard, click the Media link in the sidebar. You will be brought to a screen that lists all of the images that you have uploaded.
- Scroll to an image that you know should be attached to a gallery formatted post.
- Click the Attach link in the Uploaded to column.
- A list of posts will appear in a modal window. Choose the post to attach this image to.
Please let us know how this works for you.

I tried attaching photos through the Media sidebar, and for the previously unattached photos this worked and I could put them in an existing gallery. Awesome!
I still cannot, however, take out photos from galleries (without deleting them permanently) and more important, rearrange the photos in the gallery without starting the gallery from scratch and attaching them in the correct order. Unless you know of a better way?

I see what you mean. We’ll contact the developers and see if a fix can be pushed out for this soon.

Hi @e11eventhstar,
The developer of the theme has put in a fix for this. Please let us know in a new thread if you have any other issues.
