changes imposed on site without notice

  Why are gray boxes now appearing around the images in my galleries? I chose everything about my site (and paid for it to be customized) to be as clean and simple as possible and I hate when Word Press imposes changes to my site without any notice or option to refuse.
  There’s also a bunch of new boxes of information in the “carousel” slide format that I’d rather not be there. How do I eliminate these elements?
