Changes made to nameservers in Automattic revert to defaults.
-
My nameservers continue to revert to the WordPress nameservers even after I have specifying my own namesevers multiple times. Within a few hours of specifying the new servers, everything works as it should and the url illdownhill.com correctly directs to my non-Wordpress host. The correct name servers seem to work for 4 or 5 days and then revert to the WordPress nameservers.
I have had this problem 3 times now, and am unsure how to permanently resolve it.

I just checked your name servers and they’re currently pointing to your own host. If this happens again, please the following command in Terminal and let me know if they’ve reverted:
dig +short ns illdownhill.com

Thanks for following up. I would be happy to contact our domain registrar in this case, but I see that you’ve canceled your domain. Is that correct?
-
-
Okay. There isn’t a way to change the name servers since the domain is no longer our control.
Did you want to keep the domain instead?
-
Whatever it takes to get the name servers pointed the correct way. I was under the impression that I still controlled the domain illdownhill.com. Is this correct?

I was under the impression that I still controlled the domain illdownhill.com. Is this correct?
No. When you cancel a domain, that means you’re no longer in control of the domain.
I’ll contact our domain registrar to see if they can reactivate the domain to your WordPress.com account.
-
I’m sorry for the confusion. My previous reply was partially incorrect.
Upon taking a closer look, I see that the domain had expired on 6 September 2012, so it’s possible that you might need to pay a domain redemption fee ($80), plus the cost of registering the domain for another year ($26).
Would you like to try and reactivate the domain?
-
If I opt not to reactivate the domain, would the wordpress domain registrar have ownership over the domain name?
-
Please disregard my previous question, and instead, please direct me in the process by which I recover my domain and ensure that the name servers a directed towards my new host.
-
Okay. I’ve contacted our domain registrar to see if they can reactivate your domain.
If they’re able to do that, I’ll send a PayPal money request to the email address linked to your WordPress.com account.
-
Is there a way to manage the domain from my new wordpress.org account instead of my wordpress.com account?
-
-
Once I recover my domain, is there a way to transfer the domain to a different registrar?
-
Yes. If your domain can be recovered see > Transfer a domain to another registrar http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration/
-
There is a 60 day waiting period that ICANN imposes, but after that you can transfer the domain to a different registrar if you wish to.

Hi illdh,
We were able to reactivate the domain to your account successfully.
I’ve sent a PayPal money request to the email address associated with your WordPress.com account, so please reply to Ran’s email with the 17–digit PayPal transaction ID when you’ve made the payment.
(You’ll see the 17–digit PayPal transaction ID after you make the payment at PayPal, so please make sure to copy that before closing that browser window/tab.)
I hope this helps! :-)
