changes to "comments" not reflected on pages and posts

  I have 5 pages on my site, 4 of which are static and one of which (“News”) I’m designating for posts. I’d like the latter to have a “comments” box and the the remaining 4 NOT to; but no matter how I try to configure this – checking and unchecking the appropriate boxes in “discussion” and “screen options” – I can’t get the changes to show up onscreen. Can you please advise? Thank you!
