Changes to Interface

This morning I have found new behaviour in the wordpress tool,
    – I can’t change titles of posts, even halfway through typing the name of a new post this locks and does not allow further editing
    – I can’t edit or add content to existing posts (which I have been doing for more than a year up to today)
    – In Chrome I can’t look at the block tab, which appears to work in edge, but still does not allow me to edit things.
    – Is this another ‘non tested’ update put out by wordpress?

Wordpress.com doesn’t put out non tested updates. Most problems are due to browser issues, https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/

After doing all of that, making sure I was logged out of all the locations, and clearing the cache, cookies and resetting my computer, the problem persists where I am unable to switch between Page and Block tabs, or add new blocks to any page or posts.

And it has the same behaviour on multiple browsers so not just Chrome which is one of the recommended browsers, or edge and only after installing a fresh version of Firefox has it actually started to work again. But only in that browser.

  • Hi there,

What is the URL of the site where you’re having this problem?

All the things you describe work fine for me in all these browsers, and we also haven’t had any other reports of this, so this issue appears to be specific to your computer.

If a fresh install of Firefox resolves it, it points to a setting in the browser being the issue. Are you able to do the same with Chrome and see if that helps?

Are you using any browser add-ons in these browsers? Does disabling those help?

If you’ve already tried clearing the browser cache, also try flushing your computer’s DNS cache, and unplug your modem/router for a few seconds to clear its connection cache.

And if possible, check if the same problem occurs if you use a different computer on the same network, or if you use a different internet connection.

it was tried on Three separate computers, each with three different browsers. And in two cases the browsers were installed from scratch.

Last time these changes took about a week to fix, so I assume the same again here. Firefox definitely not as responsive as Chrome for working and when its fixed for my account (where ever I am connecting in from, as I have tried this is two other locations using different internet connections as well in my testing)

  • So were you able to get Chrome to work on any of those computers? If you’re still having trouble with it, make sure you’re not installing any browser extensions on it.

No, which was why this was rasied in the first place, at the moment I am going to test things on chrome about once per day until it gets fixed somewhere along the line. Which was how the October change effected me as well.

It might have something to do with the way wordpress has changed it loading behaviour as I have noticed disctint changes in behaviour since the issues started.

Wordpress requiring me to blow away all my browser setting because of an update is not a great solution, and it appears to fail the usuability tests I used to run and also is not disability friendly in how convoluted solving a problem that appeared overnight across three seperate computers each runing their own instance and not sharing the installations is not a good result.

I have it set up for usability and accessibility, not just for WordPress. There are no extensions, add ons or additional code added, to chrome or the site. Except for the WordPress extension itself being installed after the issues already started.

  • We cannot fix anything if we don’t know exactly what is going wrong, and if we aren’t able to replicate the issue on our end. If this was caused by an update we did, it would be affecting more than just one site in one account.

I see you have a large number of reusable blocks in your posts. It could be one of those causing this, so edit one of your posts in Firefox and remove the reusable blocks along the right side. Update the post, and then edit it in Chrome.

If it now works in Chrome, that confirms one of those blocks are causing the issue. So add those blocks back one at a time, update, and refresh. If it breaks again, the block you added right before it did is the one causing it. So then let me know which reusable block it is, and I can check if there’s something specific about the content of that block that might be causing problems.
