Changes to Notifications…

  • Unknown's avatar

And now the notifications change without any notice. And no longer tell us when they were made unless we click on them – a thing we used to be able to see at a glance – nor do they indicate whether we’ve replied to them, even when we click. And it appears we can no longer limit our view to comments only so we have to scroll past all the likes to find any unanswered comments.

Is there a point to all of these downgrades? It feels like you’re trying to provoke your customers to leave.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I work on the new notifications feature. First, thanks for your feedback, and it isn’t our intention to provoke.

Regarding the time, in the new client, there are headers that group approximately when the comment was made (it shows “Today”, “Yesterday”, “2 days ago”, etc.) – do you find this insufficient when glancing at notifications?

For reply indication and view filtering, these are indeed missing, we’ll see if we can find a suitable solution.

    Thank you for your feedback.

I also do not like the changes made to Notifications.

I miss the icon saying I’ve replied to a comment.

I miss the time in hours (not days) when the comment, etc. was made.

Thanks for responding, fredcheng – sorry, I didn’t notice earlier.

Specific things I don’t like about it:

    1. The difference in colour between unread and read is too slight.

    2. There is no reply indicator, though I note you’re looking at that and am grateful – this is probably the biggest problem.

    3. Like Dandelionsalad, I want a specific time in hours.

    4. I want to be able to select comments only to weed out all the likes – agian glad you’re looking at this.

    5. I want a heading showing the specific name of the post the comment refers to whether on my blog or someone else’s.

    6. The bell indicator is awful – you can’t see that you’ve got a comment unless you’re right at the screen, and it no longer differentiates between likes and comments.

In short, as you can tell, I want the functions that we had in the old notifications page. If you are leaving it active, as it is now, then all I really want is an easy link to it, as there used to be. At present I’ve bookmarked it, because I find the new one unusable, but I fear you’ll just do away with it at some point…

If I had been asked how the old one could have been improved, I would only have added one thing – I would like to have the ability to sort on unanswered comments only – with ‘like’ counting as an answer if that makes sense. That would have counted as an upgrade…

Oh, and adding to my last point, I’d like a way to mark a comment as ‘dealt with’ or ‘complete’ even if I am neither replying or liking…

I didn’t realize this thread had been started, so I’ll add my comment here.

I can live with a lot, but I really am unhappy with the re-design of the notification system.

If someone comments on a post, I am not given information on which post the comment is attached to. Instead, I’m provided the first words of my comment.

This is ridiculous. The only way to find which post is involved is to click again. Then, I have to come back and start over. I keep comments open on all my posts, and there’s no way I can recognize which post is involved simply by a brief reference to my comment.

You are masters of overcomplicating things, and you really have outdone yourselves here. I want a simple, fast interface — not something that requires clicking back and forth, one comment, like, or follow at a time.

Not only that, when I click the notification bubble, it takes far too much time for it to load. And, just for grins, sometimes it will indicate that a comment’s been made, and then the notification disappears on its own. I’ve seen it do that three times. (Updated FF, no add-ons)

As long as I’m at it — it’s far too hard to distinguish between likes, comments and follows. It would be nice if you’d lose the fashionable light gray all across the site.

    Hello,

I agree with many of the suggestions here so far to improve Notifications, thank you :) , and I definitely agree about the bell indicator problem where it is hard to tell when you have new notifications because there is only a tiny orangish/yellowish colored circle that barely shows on the bell. ;)

Please change the notifications and stats page back to what it was before. Now, it takes multiple more clicks to get the same amount of information.

My notifications just went back to the “old” version tonight. The “new” version was available all day. Guess “they” are still working on it. I don’t know. At a closer look, it seems like the appearance is like the “old” version, however, some changes have been made.

There are some good things about the “new” notifications, one is that you can click directly on it and reply to the comment, or put something in the trash, or whatever. You can read the entire comment not just an excerpt.

And while I dislike scrolling, there is the option to see more without having to go to the “View Archive” page. The “old” version has a set limit of 9 entries, but the font size is smaller so we can see all 9. The “new” version only shows 4 or 5, then we have to scroll to see the rest.

If you are using the “classic” dashboard, the notifications icon is still the “old” version that changes depending on what happened last (comment, like, new follow, etc.) The bell icon is on the “too-blue-to-use” WP pages.

    @fredcheng

Whoever put the notifications back as they were is a hero. It is the only sensible thing that has been done throughout this entire pitiful shambles. Well done.

It does leave a question. Why were they changed at all ? Was their any reason other than making them easier to read on a mobile phone. ?

What we don’t know is, is this change permanent or temporary?

There are some changes to the notifications although it looks like it used to look.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @dandelionslad

    Oh yes, and that too.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @fredcheng

Delighted to see we have gone back to the old notifications, more or less. I can happily live with it the way it is now. I’d really appreciate someone confirming that this is now permanent, for at least the foreseeable future, and that future changes will be advised to us before they are made, to give us a chance to comment on what we would actually see as improvements. I would also suggest that you may wish to consider widening the pool of beta-testers to avoid this kind of thing in future.

Two remaining issues – please can we go back to the old message indicator and ditch the bell. And please can we go back to the old stats page. I’m not against all change, but I am and will remain against downgrades trumpetted as upgrades.

    Thank you.

Surprise! It’s back without the time stamp and all in its WP blue color scheme.

Now, a few minutes later both https://wordpress.com/notifications/ and the button on my blog do not work for Notifications.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep, me too. I so wish they would stop playing with it. Leave the old one till they get the new one sorted. Tedious and annoying and appalling customer care.

  • Unknown's avatar

Within the last hour I have seen the old version, the new version and the non-working (spinning) version.

I agree with you, fictionfanakaff, they should launch it when it’s fixed. Although I do not like that there isn’t a time stamp on the items listed like the old version. Also that the color scheme clashes with the one I use on the “classic” dashboard/admin. pages.

I just wanted to comment that I personally do not like the new notifications drop down. I used to be able to look at this and see who I have responded to or not. Now I have to spend more time looking at each one. I wanted to ask why was this changed? It seemed to work just fine before. Again, it takes more time for me, just like the changes to the stats.

I was thinking about attaching my blog to my website, which will be going live soon, but now I am not so sure if I want to do this.

    What do others think?

  • Unknown's avatar

The notifications worked again for me but I had to re-add “wordpress.com” to allow cookies for it to work.

The “new” notifications does not show if we replied to a particular comment.

There is no link to get to “View Archive” at https://wordpress.com/notifications/. I guess one just has to have that link bookmarked like I have done.

Notice that no support person has replied to our comments since Dec. 17, 2014.

  • Unknown's avatar

The changes to notifications in the top RH screen are rather annoying. No longer is there a link to take you to the post that the comments were on, so if they refer to a long-ago post, a hunt is necessary if I want to pay the person who made the comment the courtesy of a reply.
One way round this is to have the recent comments widget, but not everybody wants to clutter a blog like that, and if one has a flood of comments the comment will soon drop off the bottom.
Is there a good reason for this exasperating change?
