Changes to notiifcations (feedback)
-
The changes to notifications in the top RH screen are rather annoying. No longer is there a link to take you to the post that the comments were on, so if they refer to a long-ago post, a hunt is necessary if I want to pay the person who made the comment the courtesy of a reply.
One way round this is to have the recent comments widget, but not everybody wants to clutter a blog like that, and if one has a flood of comments the comment will soon drop off the bottom.
Is there a good reason for this exasperating change? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. The main thread for feedback about the notifications appears to be this one: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/changes-to-notifications?replies=18 Please post your feedback there so we can keep everything in one thread.
Regarding comments, if you click on a comment in the new notifications window it should open the comment with a link to the post directly above it. At least, that’s how it looks my side. If that doesn’t work, on the classic dashboard there is also a comments section where you can see all the comments since the beginning of the blog in one place, with links to the posts where they were made. That will have to do for now until they fix the newest “upgrade”.
You can also still find the notifications archives at this link: http://wordpress.com/notifications

Well, I would have posted to that forum topic if my search for notifications had found it. So I’m staying here, to respond to what you’ve said, and then I’ll go exploring to see if others are unimpressed too.
As I said, if I click on a comment in the new notifications window it *doesn’t* open with a link to the post directly above it. It used to, and now it doesn’t.
So now I have to wander around in the dashboard?
Maybe it’s the usual, oh it works properly if you use Chrome scenario, we don’t bother to see if it works for IE users, we just tell you over and over again to clear out your cache and fiddle with your cookies and while you’re doing that, you’re not complaining… it’s your own fault for using the browser we don’t like.
Spare me from the latest upgrades, from the new beep boop thingy which mushes all my paragraphs and line spacing together, to notifications that don’t notify, everything seems clunkier and harder to do than it used to be.
I have a “positive and productive suggestion” to make: if it aint broke, please please don’t fix it. -
I am not a staff member and do not have the ability to directly fix anything. If I were, it would have said so under my name. I am a user just like you who is trying to help other users in this forum. I am directing you to that thread as that thread has already been tagged for staff and they are monitoring the feedback there.
I tried to provide you with a workaround that you can use in the meantime, but if you don’t want to use it, that’s your call. I’m just trying to help here (and I don’t get paid to help, nor to suffer other people’s rants).

The reason you are always told to clear the cache is because 90% of website problems are cause by this. Have you tried that? I checked in IE and my notifications work fine there. Make sure you also have the latest version of IE – if you’re using anything older than IE8, expect webpages to start breaking as older browsers no longer understands the code used to write most webpages.
To be very clear, this is the link I’m talking about: http://snag.gy/4QA5M.jpg
If that doesn’t appear, then please do try clearing the cache and/or updating your browser. Also make sure your flash player is updated.

Hi there.
The (very) main thread for feedback about the notifications is this:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/anyone-else-having-problems-with-the-new-notifications-layout/page/3?replies=72#post-2227824 -
Good grief, *another* main thread!
Thanks, Kokkieh, but I already had a workaround.
And I can see from the forum post that you directed me to, that other people have exactly the same issue and dislike the changes as much as I do.
I’m afraid I don’t agree with you about the cache problem: for a start I have automatic updates and am always running the latest IE, (currently V11.0.15) and secondly I clear out my cache regularly anyway. But I’ve always dutifully checked it the version when told to, and cleared the cache ,(including just now, but over and over again when we copped the new so-called improved posting experience), and it hasn’t made a scrap of difference and neither has providing feedback to the people who *are* staff.
(But if it’s such a big issue (90%!) it wouldn’t be hard for WP to do a courtesy email newsletter or a notification on the dashboard advising that they’d dreamed up some new feature and that everybody needs to do a clean-up to get it to work.)
I am open to change and improvement, and before the latest crop of innovators took over, I sent plenty of positive feedback about changes that I liked. What I don’t like is half-baked stuff dumped on us and no response from staff to the complaints. In particular I find it frustrating that these changes are being imposed to suit people using ipads and phones with no thought for how they impact on PC users. WP staff seem to rely on people like you, which is nice of you to give up your time, but from the consumer PoV, it’s a bit like going to the bank and getting help from customers instead of staff fixing the problem.
Anyway, I’ll check main thread #2, thank you Galois, and then I’m going to go back to work…
Thank you both for your time:) -
