Changes to posts do not show when sharing posts on Facebook and so on

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

I just started my blog on WordPress this weekend, and it’s really fun! However, today, I noticed when a friend shared a specific post on Facebook, that my changes to the text under the pictures have not been implemented. The text is correct when viewed on my page, but when sharing through social media, the faulty text is still there. I tried it myself as well (linking a post to Facebook), just to double check, and it was the same for me, i.e. the old version of the text is shown. This is a quite serious issue for me, as the text is supposed to be humourous and must display just the way I decided it to be. Hope ypu can help me with this issue! Thanks a lot!

    Best regards,

    Helena Utterberg

    Hello Helena,

Once you’ve published a post and it appears on Facebook, any edits you make to the content will not appear on your Facebook wall.

The only way around this is to manually delete the post from your Facebook wall, go back to your WordPress.com post, and publish it to Facebook using your sharing buttons. If you’re curious about how to set those up, take a look at this document:

Add Social Share Buttons (Classic Themes)

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Take care.

    Hi Robyn!
I suppose I expressed myself a bit unclearly, this is not the problem I’m having. What I meant was, that I publish something on my WordPress page, then I decide to make some changes after which I publish it on my WordPress page again, and everything looks fine there, all corrections implemented. However, when I click the share on Facebook button, what comes up is then is the unchanged (original) version of the post (I mean, this is what shows even before I make the final clikck to actually post it on Facebook)! This is such a strange phenomenon, I haven’t got a clue what could cause this, that’s why I was hoping you could help me :). As this problem occurred, I only had 4 posts in total on my WordPress page, so I solved it by simply erasing them all and post them anew. I would still like to know, though, how to avoid the issue described above, because it could be the case that I want to correct something again …

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to investigate this!

    Best regards,

    Helena

    Hi Helena,

I haven’ yet been able to recreate this problem you’re experiencing, so I’d like to have you try two tests for me:

    1. Please try to post/edit/share to Facebook using another browser. I see you’re using Internet Explorer. Try this experiment in Chrome or Firefox instead.
    2. Next, try Internet Explorer again. This time, after you edit your post, but before you share to Facebook, clear your cache using these instructions:
      http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

Once your cache is cleared, share your post using the Facebook sharing button and see which version of your content appears.

To confirm: You only attempt to share on Facebook once, after you’ve fully published, edited, then resaved your Post, correct? You haven’t already published your first version of the post to Facebook?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hi again!

Thanks, I’ll try this as soon as I have time. Actually, I did try different browsers as the issue occurred, but the strange thing is that I actually first noticed this problem when a friend in another country published one of the posts on Facebook (I hadn’t yet published any of my posts there myself). And when I tried to see if I could get it right I was at work and not on my home computer where the post was created and corrected. Would this cache thing still be worth a try, you think, or is that bound to one computer only?

As for your last question: Yes, that is correct, no posting before final version :D

    Best regards,

    Helena

    Hi Helena,

You are right, the browser cache clearing is computer-specific. So, if the issue is occurring both on your friend’s computer, as well as your own, the issue is probably not your version of Internet Explorer!

I have a few questions/suggestions for you, which will help me troubleshoot your issue:

    1. How did your friend publish your post to her Facebook wall? Did she copy/paste a link? Or use the Facebook sharing button beneath your post? Use another method?

    2. Had anyone else posted the first version of the WordPress.com post to Facebook before you made your changes? I know you said you hadn’t done it, but I’m wondering if one of your readers/friends might have.

    3. Did you publish your post manually? Or did you use the scheduler to auto-post on a certain date?

    4. What were the changes made to these Posts? Title? Text? Images, or other media?

    5. Were the original versions of the Posts already published on WordPress.com? Or were they saved as Drafts before you edited/published them?

    6. Has this happened on everyone of your Posts?

Thanks so much for your patience! We’ll get this all ironed out, once we can get to the bottom of the cause of the issue! All the best to you :)
