Changing a Domain from Private to Public

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been battling trying to get into contact with wordpress for a solution and haven’t been given one yet. I bought a domain about 2.5 months ago and for the last week I’ve been trying to change the domain to another website (Bluehost). However, I cannot transfer this domain as my WHOIS data is private as I registered the domain privately. Therefore when bluehost sends a confirmation to my WHOIS Email, its actually (email visible only to moderators and staff). Obviously this is not an accessible email address. How do I go about being able to make my domain public so I can transfer my account over?

    Thanks,
    Tyler

  • Hi there,

This has nothing to do with privacy on your domain, though privacy was automatically removed the moment you requested the transfer code.

Since the GDPR was implemented on 25 May, our domain provider, like most domain providers on the web, no longer show contact information in the Whois data, as doing so would be in violation of the European Union privacy laws. As a result, the domain industry has moved away from using the so-called Form of Authorisation email that is sent to start a domain transfer.

Bluehost has not implemented these changes, and are now trying to query your Whois data for contact information that no longer exist, to send you an email that should no longer be required to transfer a domain. This is something Bluehost needs to fix on their end – there is no way we can reveal the email address they need in your domain’s Whois data, as it no longer exists there.

Our domains team is in contact with Bluehost to get them to resolve this, but there is nothing we can do from our end to help transfer your domain.

Thank you for your reply. I was able to finally explain the situation to bluehost and they are going to resolve the issue. They are going to send me a separate authorization code. Thank you for finally resolving my issue.

  • Fantastic! Thanks for letting us know that this is resolved now.
