changing a domain name / URL

    Hi,

I’ve been very, very happy running my crmvendors.wordpress.com blog. So much so, that I actually went out and bought a domain name themarketingmojo.com. What I’d like to do is make that the primary URL for the blog.

As I’ve looked into this I’ve found that you can’t just change the URL. I started looking into creating a new blog, and can see how using import / export I could move the text portions (presumably using a mass find/replace on the href’s), but then there is an issue of the media library – I have quite a few images uploaded. I haven’t seen any mention as how to handle that.

Finally, then there is the SEO implications of doing this. I’m also pretty happy with the natural search results I’m getting. Does anyone have any insight, experience with what the SEO strategy, impact of doing something like this is?

In the short term, what I’m planning to do is redirect themarketingmojo.com to crmvendors.wordpress.com. Any reasons not to do this?

    Thanks in advance,

    – Tewks

URL forwarding is a good option. You will have option to add meta info for the URL itself so that will take care of SEO.

Why just redirect? Go for the domain, making crmvendors.wordpress.com into themarketingmojo.com. It’s all laid out here:

There’s no need to create a whole new blog for the new domain and import things from your old blog. Everything crmvendors.wordpress.com will still work even if it’s on themarketingmojo.com. All old links to crmvendors.wordpress.com will still work, except they will now arrive at themarketingmojo.com. SEO-wise it will not makes much difference, since WordPress’ SEO is the same, with or without domain.

I don’t know much about SEO but changing the domain will hurt your Google ranking. There are tons of threads on that here. That’s one of the reasons that it is recommended that you do domain mapping as early in the blog’s life as possible.

Vivian is correct, but I’m not sure it makes a difference. When I moved my domain-mapped blog to WordPress, due to some technical issues the domain did not resolve properly for a week, but what I learned was that the same post in my non-mapped wordpress.com blog came out higher in Google searches than the same post already several months old on my old blog. In any case, the key message is, you are not building your “brand” if you just redirect, you really need to show your brand form the beginning.

Ok – looking to wpvstp Member, I think the domain mapping will technically accomplish what I want, but based upon what I’m reading I now have SEO concerns. I will open a new thread on the why as opposed to the what.
