Changing blog address

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve read the support page (http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/) that explains how to change a blog address, but I’m not sure I fully understand it. Could someone please tell me if I’m getting this right?

My blog is now dianescookbooks.wordpress.com. If I want to change the blog address to — let’s say — dianethecook.wordpress.com, then:

    1. Assuming that I don’t purchase a site redirect upgrade, will my followers still receive their email notices of new posts, or will they all have to resubscribe to the blog under the new address?

    2. If I do purchase a site redirect upgrade, will people who type in the old address be informed that there’s a new address when they are redirected, or will they never know that the address has changed?

    3. Can a site redirect be made permanent, or does it keep expiring and have to be renewed?

    4. If I’m happy to keep my present username, nothing else about the blog will be affected and I don’t need to register a separate account — yes?

Many thanks for any assistance with this!

Absolutely. They’ll see that it’s from the new blog address.

If I do purchase a site redirect upgrade, will people who type in the old address be informed that there’s a new address when they are redirected […]

They won’t be notified, per se, but when they go to your old blog address, they’ll automatically be redirected to your new blog address.

Can a site redirect be made permanent, or does it keep expiring and have to be renewed?

You’ll have to renew the Site Redirect every year to keep it active on your old blog address.

If I’m happy to keep my present username, nothing else about the blog will be affected and I don’t need to register a separate account — yes?

If you don’t discard your current address when changing your blog address (step 6), your content will be moved to the new blog, and the content at the old blog will no longer be there.

Assuming that you’re purchasing the Site Redirect for your old blog, your visitors won’t even see it.

(You won’t need to register a separate WordPress.com account.)

If you decide not to use the Site Redirect upgrade (in favor of changing your blog address and discarding your current address), nothing else about the blog will be affected aside from the new address.

    I hope this helps! :)

This is a somewhat belated thank you for the explanation, Bryan. I’ve been out of town and just received the notice of your reply today.
