Changing Blog Address to Something I Already Own

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello everyone,

The title is fairly self-explanatory. I have a site: (email visible only to moderators and staff) and I have registered a site (email visible only to moderators and staff). which I would like to be my primary.

If the second was unregistered, then from my previous experience, then I would simply click change address etc. and the followers and posts would simply be transferred to my new blog

Changing the address from one to the other doesn’t seem to be as simple as I’ve done it before, as I’ve already registered the 2nd one, so it says “this site already exists!” when I try to change the address of the 1st.

Any suggestions on how to go about this?

    Thanks so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Once a WordPress.com site name has been claimed, you cannot rename an existing site to that name in order to change its address. You will instead need to export your content from your old site and import it into the new one.

Thanks for the quick reply, I’ve been searching the site and found that whilst this is relatively straightforward, to move my followers, I have to: “contact us, and we’ll take care of it in a jiffy.”
I can’t find an email, so I have no idea what to do for that.

    Thanks

We can move your followers over if your new site is the same as your old site. Once you have done the export/import and set up your new site, let me know.

Ok done. It says to wait now until for processing.
What will happen to my stats (I’m sort of hoping they’ll carry over)
    and followers’ news feeds?
    Thanks

I can merge your stats for you between the sites as well.

Ok thanks! I don’t have many views, but I would be a little disappointed if they disappeared.

    Thanks so much for everything!

    I see content at http://sophisticatedsilliness.wordpress.com/

Are you done with the site and ready to go, or are you planning to make other changes?

No that’s it. I am ready to go.

    Thanks

I’ve taken care of all of this for you. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks so much for everything!!!

Although, this would’ve been much easier if I’d just changed the URL using the tool, from the start, instead of creating the blog and then transferring to it. Perhaps I could make a suggestion to make this process easier for both of our sakes’?

It is much easier if you just change the blog name using the tool, but sometimes people create a new blog before they realize that option exists.

If you have a suggestion for how we can make the process to change a blog name more obvious, that would be great. We’re always looking for ways to make things easier.

I guess it would help to be able to use urls which have been deleted by another user. I know this feature has been stated as unavailable and I don’t know the technological constraints, but to me, enabling this would seem like the easiest way. That way, someone could simply delete the blog they created by mistake and change the URL to the deleted blog’s URL afterwards.

I also don’t know how often you get these sorts of requests, it may be that there are too few to actually create such a system and so doing this takes up less of your time.

    But yeah, thanks again.
