Changing blog url, username

  We’re about to change our blog url, and I’ve done enough poking around the site to know that the option to change your username when changing your blog url seems to be something that confuses many people.

  Truth be told, I don’t really care about the username, since we’ve already changed the display name. I just want our old content to appear under the new blog address. Is there a choice related to the usernames that I could make where this would *not* be the case? Which username choices will move my old content to my new blog?

  At this point, we’re unsure if we’re purchasing the site re-direct at this point.

  There are only two ways to change a blog URL.

  http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/
  Note that if you do not purchase a site redirect upgrade then every links will be broken and all the page rank, authority and backlinks the original blog URLs has earned are gone forevermore.

  What has me confused is it seems that – in some instances – people have attempted to change their url, and, somehow, changed their usernames but ended up with a blank blog at the url with the new username. Or did they set out to change their username and then this created the blank blog with the new username url?

  At any rate, I’d really, really like to avoid a blank blog associated with a new username at my new url. I know there are some username choices presented when one changes the url – I’m just not sure I really understand the implications of each these. I don’t want to make the mistakes others have made, and I’m a little confused about the implications of the choices under step 6 in the link you gave me (http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/). Could you explain what each means in terms of the old blog’s content?

  I don’t especially care about the admin username, but I absolutely need the old content to appear at the new url when I change it.

  I understand why one might want to purchase a site re-direct upgrade, and we’re definitely considering this.
