Changing colors of Oslo theme on wordpress.com

I’m using the wordpress.com site (not .org) to create and update a new blog. I’m a complete neophyte and am doing everything via the web site. I just purchased the Oslo theme and am trying to customize it with nearly no success. Example: when I try to change the background color of the sidebar, the only choice I’m offered is black. What am I missing?
