Changing column widths?

Can I change the widths of the content and the sidebar? I want the sidebar a bit wider and the content a bit narrower.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Howdy again!

I added a little bit of code to your site’s CSS available at Appearance->Custom Design->CSS. You’ll see a .site-content and a .widget-area rule, each with a width percentage.

You can adjust those values—lower on the .site-content area and higher on the .widget-area to find the balance you like. They should add up to 100%.

    Hope that helps!

Um. According to my (admittedly, fairly pathetic) maths, those two percentages total 91.145833334%.
    Am I missing something, kraftbj?

  • Welcome to Internet math :-)

Seriously, I did omit part of the thought. The total width is 100%. The .site-content will extend X% from the left over and the .widget-area will extend Y% from the right. If there’s anything lacking, it is additional “padding” between the two.

In theory, you could have them both set to 25% with the middle half being white space. So, with your permission, I’ll retract and revise my comments to say that those two values and any space you’d like between the two should equal 100%.

    Apologies for the confusion!

    Danke schön, mein liebling!

    Um.
With apologies, I can’t use that code you supplied on this particular template (twentyeleven). Dunno why.
I really want to widen the sidebar and make the content narrower: but when I copy your code in and adjust 3 up and 3 down, it all disappears but for a kind of heading.
    :-}
    ???

  • I’m checking out your Custom CSS now and will report back in a few moments.

  • Each theme will be different, since we’re, basically, overriding what the theme developer had intended.

I added the Custom CSS for Twenty Eleven in your Custom CSS area. This one is a bit different, but if you equally increase one and decrease the other, it should work out.

Alas – I can’t get the content side small enough to stop the sidebar from dropping below it.
Obviously I’m being a halfwit; but would you give the halfwit some additional help, please, OBO?

    H E L P !
People are sending me emails about the stuffed-up site.
I KNOW it’s my own fault, but I’m about to die of embarrassment.
    Only YOOOOOOOOU can save me.
    :-}

  • Let me take a look :-) I’ll see what I can do.

  • Sorry about that. Twentyeleven allows you to increase the content width pretty easily, but the sidebar took a bit more than I expected. Sorry for leading you a bit down the wrong path!

I made the content a bit smaller via the #primary 90% width, which allowed the sidebar to fit back where we like it to be.

    FANTASTICO!
    MERAVIGLEUX!
Tell ’em I said you should be paid more, OK?
    Thank you again, OBO!!!

    I should’ve sent you a hug, shouldn’t I?
But you might’ve thought I’m a bold old broad. :-)
    Well I am – so I do.
Thanks for your untiring efforts to solve my config. problems, and for their ultimate success!

  • :-) Much appreciated. Nothing like a hug to end the day. I’m signing off now but if you have any other questions, as always, drop us a line.

    Cheers!
