Changing dimensions of featured image from post to slider

Why does featured image change dimensions when in slider and when above post?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Featured images have set a set height/width so that they will display correctly in the theme. Featured images above posts do as well. For the TwentyFourteen theme, the featured images work best if they are 1038px wide as explained at the bottom of this page:

The theme automatically uses the largest image size possible (without enlarging the image past the original dimensions) in an attempt to fit the width of the box.
It looks like you’ve made some adjustments via CSS. Were you able to achieve the look you were going for?

Yes, I have figured out how to make some adjustments. Still in process to know if I am satisfied.
I was wanting to be able to have faces in the slider, but they don’t turn out so well with the entry-header. I decided I will put in pictures that will look good in the slider like the “Spring Editorial” one rather than with people.
Thank you for taking the time to respond and share how the theme works with featured images.
