Changing DNS disables email service
-
Hi,
I am currently trying to get my blog domain at afjmg.wordpress.org to be mapped to afjmg.org.
I currently own the domain afjmg.org and have it set up with 1and1.com.
I purchased wordpress domain mapping and reset the DNS with 1and1 to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and NS2.WORDPRESS.COM.
After doing this and “Updating primary domain” to afjmg.org within wordpress settings, it seems to have disabled the 1and1 email servers as well.
Is there a way that I can keep my existing domain and email service with 1and1 and only redirect the domain and leave the mail settings alone to be hosted with 1and1?
Thank you for any help. -
Hi there,
Yes, that is indeed possible, however in order to do so you will still need to change the nameservers over to us and then can change the MX (Mail Exchange) records back towards 1and1. As long as they provide the correct records, everything should work just fine! :)

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I know how to change the nameservers over on the 1and1 site.
But then how do I change the MX back towards 1and1
Do you have a step by step?Thank you

Heya!
We do actually! We have a help article right here which not only shows you where to go, but also gives an example MX record so you can have an idea of what to enter. If you’re still lost, you can let me know what 1and1 have given you and I might be able to interpret it for you!

Thank you sir,
I can’t seem to find the MX records while logged into my account at 1and1 so I sent them a request.
Thanks again

do you know if they’re public – like if I would be able to see them from my admin panels? or if they have to give me that info?
i could give you the login info to my 1and1 so that you could check?
let me know if you’d be interested.
thank you -
Hi there,
I just went online and searched google for 1and1’s MX records. I found this help article.
http://faq.1and1.co.uk/domains/domain_admin/dns_settings/15.html
Does this appear to be the same company?
The correct MX records are at the very bottom of the page and are:
Address: mx00.1and1.co.uk Priority: 10
Address: mx01.1and1.co.uk Priority: 20 -
Hi,
I see. This does look like the same company.
When I plug that info as shown into the wordpress custom dns records it says:
We can’t save these records because they don’t look right to us. Check the errors below. Please contact support if you are unable to resolve the problem.
1. This does not match any of the DNS record formats.
2. This does not match any of the DNS record formats.here is an example of the format they suggest:
MX <pref> <host>
TXT <text>
CNAME <subdomain> <host>
A <subdomain> <IP>
SRV <_service._protocol> <priority> <weight> <port> <domain>
Sample records
MX 10 MAIL1.EXAMPLE.COM.
MX 20 MAIL2.EXAMPLE.COM.
TXT v=spf1 include:mail.example.com ~all
CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.EXAMPLE.COM.
A webmail 1.2.3.4
SRV _xmpp-client._tcp 10 10 5269 example.com.1and1 still hasnt responded with any info

Hi there,
I actually had just copy/pasted from their help center because I wanted to make sure it was the right place before you put anything in!
The format which we would need is as follows:
MX 10 mx00.1and1.co.uk
MX 20 mx01.1and1.co.ukGo ahead and give those a try and see if it works! I think we’re there!

OK, do I need any additional info in there –
re:
TXT v=spf1 include:mail.example.com ~all
CNAME autodiscover EXCHANGE.EXAMPLE.COM.
?Thanks so much

Hi there,
Unless 1and1 directs you to include a TXT record (which I didn’t see any indication of one in their documentation) then you should be fine. And no, you shouldn’t need a CNAME at all. Your email should begin working within a few hours!
