changing DNS records to allow www. url

  • Unknown's avatar

I have recently transferred my wordpress blog to self hosting, I have pointed my domain registered through to my new hosting. while http://giraffescanbake.com works, http://www.giraffescanbake.com does not. I had added a CNAME alias record but it is still not working. Please could you let me know what I need to do to make the www. address work.

Also I was told by wordpress to keep my nameservers as wordpress’s but could you tell me why this is? As if I have a hosting problem my hosters may not be able to help as it’s not their nameservers.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Michelle,

I just took a look at your DNS records and while you had created a wildcard DNS entry which pointed to http://www.giraffescanbake.com, you had not yet created an entry for http://www.giraffescanbake.com which pointed to giraffescanbake.com.

I went ahead and did that for you, and by now it should be working (though sometimes propagation can take a little longer every once in a while).

To answer your other question, in almost all cases nameservers should definitely be used to point a domain name, however in this case your host is GoDaddy.com. Your domain is registered through us, however the mechanism which we use to do the actual registering of domains is via WildWest Domains, which is a subsidiary of GoDaddy as well.

As such, both the domain and the hosting are with GoDaddy, however their systems are infamously confused when a domain is registered with them and yet not registered with them (as in this case). Their nameserver systems will not work correctly and so you are forced to use IP addresses instead.

To solve this, your best bet is to transfer your domain to another registrar (any registrar will do). We have help articles which will help you through this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration/

Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them or clarify anything!
