Hi @beethoven678,
If you just want to change you domain from beethoven190.wordpress.com to SOMETHINGELSE.wordpress.com, then you must follow the instructions given in this support document: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/If you want to remove .wordpress.com at the end then you can register a new domain via WordPress.com. Read more about it here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/
And if you are getting a domain from some other registrar like GoDaddy, NameCheap, Bluehost, etc then you can use that domain for your wordpress.com blog/site. Read this document: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/, which shows how to point your domain registered outside wordpress to your wordpress site.
Hope this helps :)

A follow on question to your last point otpidusprime, what if domain at another registar, GoDaddy, is renewed and contact info changed through GoDaddy, yet underlyinig arlingtontree.wordpress.com lists the domain (arlingtontrees.org) as expired. We have used wordpress under the free plan, with this set up for years. The issue just happenend when I did my two-year renewal GoDaddy. hope you can help

You can try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, login again and see if it still lists it as expired. If it does, then it might be because you require a paid WordPress.COM plan to map your domain to your wordpress.com site. So make sure you upgrade before mapping your domain.
If you had already upgraded before then please ensure that your plan is still active and not expired.
