Changing domain from elsewhere to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi I’ve contacted my previous registrar and they are happy to do the necessary to point users to my new WordPress site….BUT…..they point out that I should complete my new site before they make the transfer, otherwise visitors will see my currently ‘under construction’ site.I keep trying to make the new site but whenever I try to preview pages it just flips to my existing non-Wordpress site. Is there any way around this? Do I just get them to redirect and accept that I can’t actually put anything on my WordPress site until that has happened?? Many thanks for your help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,
Is your new site going to be hosted on WordPress.com? If so, you’ll put content on a *.wordpress.com domain (such as curiouslittleboxes.wordpress.com). Once that’s ready, you can change the name servers at your registrar and set up domain mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Yes…I’ve paid for my domain name (www.shelliebyatt.co.uk) to be a WordPress site (www.shelliebyatt.com) – should I not have done that until I had built up the site’s content? I try to start making the WordPress site but each time I try to view the page it flips to the old site (www.shelliebyatt.co.uk). Should I get the registrar to redirect users now…otherwise how will I be able to make my WordPress site??

PS I do understand that I can’t just transfer my old website to the new one but at the moment I can’t publish any pages on the new site for the reason above!

Many thanks for helping a complete numpty like me!

  • Hi @sbyatt, you could cancel mapping until you’re ready:
    https://wordpress.com/my-upgrades

Or you can make the *.wordpress.com address primary. I’ve done that for you for now:
    https://wordpress.com/my-domains

    Cheers!
