Changing Domain Name
-
Hello,
I was interested in changing my domain name to another domain name. The domain is taken, but has clearly been inactive since 2006, and only has a starter post, likely by a bot. Would it be possible for me to acquire this domain name? If not, is there a point in time at which domain name expires after a period of disuse? It just seems like a waste for wordpress to host a bunch of unused zombie blogs on its servers, when there are users who want those domains. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No.
Note that in these cases the blog’s owner rarely responds to comments or to contact information and there is no expiration date on .wordpress.com blogs unused, reserved or otherwise.
Moreover, Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

Then if you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

Interesting that the domain names are never deleted. Would it not then be possible for a bot/person to create an innumerable amount of wordpress domain’s, all with a single post: “This domain is available for sale. For $X. Please wire to (email visible only to moderators and staff)”?, thereby creating a revenue generating domain “hosting” site for free? I’m surprised something like this hasn’t already happened, given the conditions you’ve mentioned.

There’s built-in prevention for that. More to the point. My answer is correct. It is what it is and there are many other threads for me to answer.

One would hope there are. Anyways, the domain name isn’t that big of a deal, I was just curious to know about the issue as it seemed like an inefficiency in the system. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
