Changing domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

Transfer my domain name from Mr Site to one of my worpress sites – ie swop name

    Thanks

  • Hi –

I’m happy to help. There aren’t any domains associated with this user account though.

It sounds like you want to use a custom domain, purchased at Mr Site, with your WordPress.com site. Is that right?

These are the steps you’ll take to get that set up.

    1. Add a plan to your WordPress.com user account. Those are at https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and the fee is for the annual price which also includes your mapping fee.

Domain mapping is what connects that domain to our service here. This way, when folks get to your site, it shows the WordPress.com version.

    2. Go to My Sites – Domains – Add – Map it To connect the domain to your WordPress.com account. There won’t be a charge for this as it’s included with your plan purchase.

    3. At Mr Site you’ll need to edit the DNS records of the domain to point to WordPress.com. Those final steps are outlined on this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Write back to me here if you have any questions about this information.

Thanks Liz, I’ll follow that up.

Regarding paying for a plan – if I go for the standard at £36 and then want to upgrade within the year to the £89 one – can I do that?
and would I just pay the difference?

It’s dependent on my being able to understand the technicalities of how to upload video clips of my work and how much I would use this facility

    Many thanks
    Sian

  • Hi @sianhughesart, you’d be welcome to start with personal and upgrade later. The price difference isn’t exact because it depends on when you upgrade and what not, but we do give you a discount to upgrade.

And, once you have a plan with direct support, you can get in touch if you’re having trouble uploading videos — or if you need help with anything else. You can do that here: http://wordpress.com/help/contact

Hi – starting on this and following instructions from the first reply

Can you clarify? You mention mapping but it seems to me I am transferring my domain name http://www.sianhughes.net from Mr site to wordpress. I want to keep my sianhughesart.wordpress.com site content and swop the name to http://www.sianhughes.net and carry on building from there…

The choice of actions on the wordpress info is

Transfer your domain away from your current registrar.
Domain registration and billing will be moved from your current provider to WordPress.com
Manage your domain and site from your WordPress.com dashboard
    Extends registration by one year
    Included in paid plans
    Learn more about domain transfers

Map your domain without moving it from your current registrar.
Domain registration and billing will remain at your current provider ie Mr Site?
Manage some domain settings at your current provider and some at WordPress.com
Requires changes to the domain’s DNS
£11.00 per year plus registration costs at your current provider

Is there a phone number I can call to talk me through this! I keep finding more questions as I go along.

I have now tried clicking upgrade while in my sianhughesart.wordpress site – I need to pay first, then guessing the options start form there -?

  • Hi there,

The best option is to transfer your domain. Therefore you’ll have both your domain and your site under the same roof.

I see that you have already purchased a Personal plan and to transfer your domain here you can follow these step-by-step instructions:
