Changing Domain Name
-
Hi, I would like to change the name of my blog, and thus also change my domain address. Would I be able to somehow directly change the domain that is currently active? Or would I have to simply register a new one and pay the full fee again?
The current one will be active until November 12, 2014. So if it can be changed, that will be great. If not, I would have to either request that it be deleted (and I register a new domain), OR that I’ll wait until it expires (although please tell me how to cancel the auto-renew). I am still contemplating on this, but first I would like to hear back from you and see if my preferred option of changing the domain name is available.
Current address: http://www.jaywalkcollective.com
Newly desired address: http://www.precociousragamuffin.com
(P.S. I’ve checked that the new domain is indeed available.)Thank you for your help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You will indeed need to purchase an entirely new domain name. Domains cannot be changed, they can only be canceled and then repurchased.
To turn off auto-renew, you can log in to your account’s Dashboard and then go to Store >> My Upgrades and then manage the auto renewal there.
It’s worth noting that you can have multiple domains attached to any one blog, so you can purchase the new domain at any time. You would just have both domains pointing to this blog for a little while. It’s entirely up to you!

Thank you for the reply.
I did realise one thing, though. My domain registration came as part of the WordPress.com Premium package that I purchased. So when I go to the “My Upgrades” page, the auto-renew setting is only available for adjustment next to “WordPress.com Premium”, instead of the actual domain name listed underneath that.
Obviously I would like to continue the other functions of the WordPress.com Premium service (such as keep how I have customised my site), so I would like for that to renew. But am I correct in assuming that I have simply used up the domain part that came with the Premium package? And that if I want a new domain, I’d have to pay extra per year since it’s outside of the existing Premium package?
See, on my page the Premium service is set to cost $99 per year, and underneath that, the domain cost is listed as $0, but in brackets: normally $26 per year. If I cancel the current domain and still want to keep the Premium service, I’d have to still pay $99, but plus another $26 per year for a new domain, making it $125 per year.
My question would then be: What if I let both the Premium service expire and cancel my current domain (or simply cancel everything immediately), AND THEN purchase the Premium package once again ($99 per year) — would I then be able to start anew, since the package originally includes all the advanced functions PLUS the option to register a domain? Or is there a restriction saying that I may only receive the domain part of the package for the FIRST time that I go Premium?
Please clarify this, thank you very much!

Hiya,
That is absolutely something that you could choose to do! Especially if you don’t mind going up to the edge of the expiration, you could (and should) just turn off automatic renewal and the day of expiration (or maybe the day before), cancel everything and purchase a new Premium plan and get the included domain along with it.
That is a perfectly legitimate plan, and not something which we have any rules about whatsoever!
