Changing domain name / redirecting site
-
Hello,
I am a bit confused. I want to change my domain name, and also make it so if someone types in my old web address they will be directed to the new web address.
Wordpress tells me to purchase a new domain name, and I can add it to my current account. This is fine, but what I’m wondering about is this new domain a blank new website? As I wish to have all of the web material on current domain on the new domain.
Hope this makes sense.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Site redirect might solve your problem.
Please visit below link regarding site redirect.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Thanks, I’m not actually leaving wordpress though. I would be purchasing a new domain through wordpress. My current domain is owned by wordpress but pointed out to squarespace. It’s too expensive to transfer the whole thing to squarespace and change the domain name through squarespace. I know it all sounds like a big loop but this seems like the easier / cheaper way.

Hi –
The new domain would connect to your already built, free .wordpress.com site. It would not be blank, the old site is going to show up when someone tries using either the free site address or the new domain.
Also, the free site is going to automatically redirect to the new custom domain in browsers. There’s no need to purchase a redirect.
Write back to me here with any other questions. It’d be great to know which free site you are working on and the domain that you want to add to it.

Thanks Liz. That worked! However the the web address still shows as k8goff.com, is this because k8goff is my primary domain, should I just change the new domain to the primary domain?
-
Yes. Whichever domain is set as the primary is the one visitors will see, and all other domains on the site will redirect to that one.

Thanks, I just did that…but is still showing as k8goff.com…is this because I’ve only recently changed / added new domain? Will it show tickertapedesign.com within 72 hours?
-
It looks like you currently have k8goff.com pointed to a Squarespace site, not to WordPress.com. It will only redirect automatically if the domain is pointed to us.
If you want to point the domain back to us you’ll need to go to My Site ->Domains and edit the DNS records to remove the custom A records you added to point it to Squarespace. Once our default A records are restored, that domain will correctly redirect.
If instead you want the Squarespace site currently at k8goff.com to show at your new domain instead, you’ll have to add the new domain on Squarespace’s end, and set up the necessary redirect with them. We have no control over what domain your Squarespace site loads at.
