changing domain: will my old URL's redirect?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am thinking of moving from wp.com to wp.org.
But will the links to my posts on other sites and blogs automatically redirect to my new address or will readers get an error notice?

If yes, how do I change all external links to my posts?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Moving your blog and avoiding broken links can be accomplished using a Site Redirect upgrade: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

Thank, this looks really useful! But am i right that if I buy this I automatically buy a yearly subscription? Because I am unsure if I want a yearly one since I don’t expect to need it year after year. Or can I cancel the subscription at the end of the year?

Yes, you’re correct. It’s a yearly subscription and you can cancel whenever you wish.

Hi. I have the same concerns I think, and just want some more clarification. Soon I will be changing the domain of my site and moving to a wp.org setup.

1st, maybe a stupid question, but just trying to understand how it works…On WP.com – if I get a new domain name and set it as my new primary domain – are all instances of the old domain name throughout my site automatically switched over to the new one?
(ex. OLDsite.com/2015/05/07/cars would automatically become NEWsite.com/2015/05/07/cars?)

2nd, if I do the above and pay for the site redirect feature, will links scattered around the web pointing to my various articles redirect properly not just to my new domain homepage, but to the appropriate post? (ex. if someone clicks on an existing link on facebook to OLDsite/2015/05/07/cars, through the redirect will it automatically find NEWsite/2015/05/07/cars?

3rd – On WP.com is there a way to find and replace links within my own articles to other articles – to switch out “OLDsite” with “NEWsite” in the link? Or is that something I’d have to do manually?

4th – I eventually plan to export my page and begin hosting it elsewhere to use on WP.org with my NEWsite.com domain. Here on WP.com can I keep my site active, switching the primary domain back to OLDsite.com, so that I can network with the wordpress.com community and reblog my posts from the new site?

5th, and finally – On WP.org can you still login and participate in the wordpress.com community (liking, sharing, utilizing “reader”, etc.)?

Thank you for hearing me out. Sorry for so many questions. I’m just not savvy with the inner workings of websites and hosting. Thanks!

By the way my blog is: http://nutritionphilosophyfreedom.com/

@bradena57 – I don’t think I can answer all your questions, and another volunteer may come through to answer, but here’s what I know:

The most important aspect of the site redirect is that in order for it to work, you must keep the same URL structure on your self-hosted WP site when you move.

The site redirect is a permanent redirect, meaning that search engines that crawl your WP.com site will be informed that your WP.com site has permanently moved to a new address. Once they’ve crawled your new site, those are the links that will be served up in search engine returns.

5th-As far as participating in the WPcom community, some features, like “liking” and “sharing” are available through the jetpack plugin for standalone WP sites. But as far as the Reader, your self-hosted site won’t be included in tag searches, as that part is exclusive to WPcom sites. However, people who have WPcom accounts will be able to subscribe to your site in their Reader.

The support doc that micawbr linked to above may answer most of your other questions about the redirect. If not, please post back here.

Thanks for the response justjennifer. I think I get the redirect now. Still trying to completely understand the details of how a domain name change works and if I’ve done a name change and moved my site to wp.org with the new name – if I can maintain my original site here on wp.com with the old domain name. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks!
