Changing domains
-
Hello,
I own two sites currently – maniacmanee.wordpress.com and maneemanjunath.wordpress.com. I would like to change the domain name of my first site (maniacmanee) to the second (maneemanjunath) and delete the second. Since the domain name maneemanjunath already exists I cannot change the domain name of maniacmanee. Is there any way I can rename maniacmanee to maneemanjunath?
Thanks,

Hi there,
One option would be to export the first site and import it into the second one. Then tweak the second to get everything just right before deleting the first one.
This is how I would achieve what you’ve described, but another member or staff may have another solution?
You’ll find the options for Exporting and then Importing your site under Settings.

Hi @maneemanjunath,
It’s not possible to change the address of a site to one that is already in use. So exporting content from maniacmanee.wordpress.com and importing it to maneemanjunath.wordpress.com is the best way forward in this instance (what you suggested is correct @panopticfoundations).
maniacmanee.wordpress.com can be deleted once all of the content has been imported into maneemanjunath.wordpress.com successfully. It’s worth noting that deleting a site will mean that address is unavailable in the future — something to bear in mind if there is a chance you may need maniacmanee.wordpress.com again.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you so much for responding. How would it work with people who are followed or subscribed to my blog. How would they be affected by the export? Would exporting also include comments, likes, etc?

Hi, great questions.
– Exporting and importing will move comments to the new site
– It will not move the followers or stats. We’d need to do that for you once you’re ready, so update us here.
– Likes are harder to export, particularly social media likes and what not, because they’re based on the old address. One other consideration: if you get much traffic from search engines or links on outside sites, you’ll want to be sure to send folks to the new site somehow. Some people will put an otherwise blank page up that says the site has moved. You can also redirect traffic automatically, which will also notify search engines that the address has changed: https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/
Let us know if you need more help!

Dear Supernova,
Thank you so much for the quick and detailed response. I have performed the export and am ready for the followers and stats to be moved. Could you please make it happen?
Thanks in advance,

You bet, Manasa. That’s starting now and should be done in the next few minutes. And if you’d like to add a redirect too so you don’t lose SEO, that can be done here:
