Changing email address associated with an account

  I would like to change the email associated with my wordpress blogs (I have to as I recently retired and my current work based email account will be closed down from the end of today,May 3rd 2015).

  Whenever I try to change my email address in Account Settings, it will not let me save the results. The suggested solution is that I must already have used this email address with another wordpress account and that this is not allowed. However, this is a completely new email address, which has not previously been used with any wordpress accounts, so that cannot be the reason in this case. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
