I can no longer find a way to change fonts, colors, etc. when I write a blog post. I can’t afford Premium. What happened?

Did you allow either an annually renewable custom design upgrade or an annually renewable premium upgrade package that contains the custom design upgrade to expire?
Custom Design Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I remove Customize?
All upgrades on WordPress.com are renewed yearly. Should you choose to cancel your subscription, your custom fonts, colors, and CSS will no longer be applied to your blog. The revisions for your customizations will still be saved, but they won’t be visible on the blog’s front end unless you renew your subscription. https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions -
Note that the Custom Design upgrade can be purchased and renewed as a separate upgrade only by those who have username accounts registered prior to September 1st, 2014, like yours.

If you are referring only to the text inside of your posts and pages you can make some changes without an upgrade.
Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the Text ie. HTML editor. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/
Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2
To display the second row of icons, first select the toolbar toggle icon at the end of row 1 and click it. https://i0.wp.com/en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/kitchensink.png
