Changing from a POST to a PAGE

Hi all, I actually have 2 questions.

    1) I’d like to have a welcome PAGE as the very first page when people arrive to my blog, instead of the POST page where the daily post and comments take place. Would anyone tell me how I can switch the order of the tab? I tried putting “1” in the “page order” box, but it doesn’t change anything. I guess putting “1” will only change the order among the PAGE pages.

    2) If, instead of 1), I simply want to add a sentence or 2 of “static” text on the POST page (which is called “home”), is it possible to do and how? All I want to do is just to add a paragraph of welcome text on top before people start leaving comments.

    3) As I was searching in this Forum, I think I’ve read something like “if I change the 1st page from PAGE to POST”, Google will put my blog in the bottom of the search results. Is it really true?

Thanks very much in advance for any advise.

Thanks, teck07, for your reply. Now that I’m reading the 2nd post again more carefully, oh! I’ve missed one major point! Indeed, the static page option will only show when 2 pages have been created!!! Well, sometimes I wonder how come things are so discreet and implicit with WordPress. Thanks so much!

    Your welcome! hkbulibrary,

We now have a “sticky post” option here at wordpress.com: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2008/09/08/sticky-posts/ which allows you to “stick” a post at the top of the main blog page. This may do away with a lot of static pages once people find out about it.

Thank you thesacredpath, I totally forgot to mention something about this…
Yes indeed it would definably eliminate the staic page option…

The conundrum: Does the blogger remove the static page, and lose the extra “hit” that they get by using it and go with the sticky post or do I keep the static page for the extra hit?

Personally, I read the static page once (maybe I read it once), and then bookmark the post page instead.

Are you kidding me? The extra hit they might get by having the static page cannot begin to approach the extra hits they’ll get for making their blog much more accessible. I, personally, am on a mission to stamp out static pages as opening pages all across the internet.

Thanks thesacredpath for mentioning about the Sticky Post. Yes, I think I will use the sticky post instead of changing a POST to a PAGE as the welcome stuff is only for the beginning anyway. What an amazing group of people in WordPress. I’m glad I’ve chosen WP over Blogger and Yahoo Blog. Thanks a million!!
