changing from .com to .org and keeping name but have not data to move

I signed up for the free wordpress.com and I see quickly that even with the 99 a year upgrade I cannot customize as much as i want. I have not even written a word, but I want to get rid of wordpress.com and get wordpress.org but use the same name but I never linked the domain name that I bought from GoDaddy to it. What is the easiest way to close down the first blog at wordpress.com and open one at .org and keep the name? And again, I have absolutely no data to move. I guess I’m asking this because I don’t want to go through the hassle of moving the site since I have nothing on it to save except the name! but i guess I’m hoping that since no domain is linked to it perhaps there’s some quick and easy way. I am extremely new to all of this so I apologize in advance. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi hilarykhan,

You mentioned you already have a domain from GoDaddy. One option is to map it to your free blog glutenfreejunkfoodaddict.wordpress.com, after which you’ll be able to open it with YourDomain.com. Then buy the Custom Design upgrade through which you can customize the styling and fonts.

Here the installation and setup is already managed by WordPress.com, you get a ready-to-use blog for which you will have map the domain name only.

If you don’t want this, and want to upload the WordPress software downloaded from WordPress.ORG to a web host, you can do so by purchasing a hosting account from hosts like Bluehost or GoDaddy.

You will have to do the installation and setup on your own, then point your domain to it.

WordPress.ORG support forum deals with self-hosted installs.

Thank you for you answer. I do understand what you have told me. What I’m wondering is if I have to shut the wordpress.com down before I can open the .org one because it has the same name, though the domain name I purchased is not linked to the .com one right now.

  • Since you have no content/data on the WordPress.com blog, there’s no real need to shut this blog down to start a new self-hosted WordPress.ORG blog.

There are a few possibilities if you want to delete the WordPress.COM blog.

You can either set the blog to private, or permanently delete it. The latter option will not allow you to get back the blog address/URL, all its content and the xyz.wordpress.com address will be gone forever.

The domain name that you’ve bought from GoDaddy is not mapped to this current WordPress.com blog, so that will be completely separate and has no effect on it.
