Changing Google Description of Site
-
Hi all,
I need help with the Baskerville 2 theme.
When I pull up my website in google, the site description is as follows:
This is a text widget. The Text Widget allows you to add text or HTML to your sidebar. You can use a text widget to display text, links, images, HTML, or a …
I can’t figure out why this is, and I’m not sure where to enact changes to this description.
I’ve read online that I should access the “header” folder.. but I’m using a free plan, so no SEO tools.
Is there some kind of workaround, or maybe I could switch between themes to make the edits? Just not sure.
Thanks so much.

I specifically need help changing the Google Description / meta data tag for my home page.

Hi @cikayda,
At the time Google last crawled your site, the text in the text widget was the only real content being displayed on the home page, so that’s what Google decided to show.
Here’s the cache of your site that Google is basing its info on – https://goo.gl/ue6Grp
Since those widgets have now been removed, Google should change the description it shows once it recrawls the site.
However, there is no way to determine what exactly Google shows without setting a meta description.
You can speed up the process of recrawling your site by verifying it with Google Search Console, then using the use the “fetch as Googlebot and index” feature.
but I’m using a free plan, so no SEO tools.
The only way to set a meta description is by upgrading to a Business plan. There is no other method.

Gary,
Thanks so much for clarifying this with me. So there are no workarounds then?
Well.. roll the dice and see what Google picks! :)

100% get a business plan and also submit via Google Search console to speed up the recrawl per the above comment!

One does not need an upgrade to request that Google recrawls their site and purchasing an upgrade does not expedite the process. https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6065812?hl=en
