Changing Header Size on Indpendent Publisher Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to update the look of my blog and decided I didn’t want to use the Site Identity options since I don’t care for the font options. I made my banner 1440×600, just as all info for this them says. but when it loaded in the customizer, its was super zoomed in. After playing around, I realize if you DON’T use the Gravatar option, Site Idenity option, and I think the Social Menu, you don’t acually have a 1440×600 header.

Has anyone come up with a work around for this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you want to display someone else’s Gravatar, navigate to the Customize → Theme Options and change the Gravatar email address.

There was a trick that Staff provided for a different theme, but might work for Independent Publisher as well but you would need to set up a blank Gravatar on a different email address: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/taille-de-la-banniere-reduite?replies=22#post-2777449

Regardless, I’ve tagged this for Staff input on the needed size for a custom header image when disabling the Gravatar and other features you mentioned.

And I’m also requesting Staff input about the magnification/zooming issue. The large image I used in my test site header became really blurry.

    Hi,

I realize if you DON’T use the Gravatar option, Site Idenity option, and I think the Social Menu, you don’t acually have a 1440×600 header

The height of the header image is partly determined by the elements included inside of it. The theme has been designed to contain certain elements and while you can choose not to have them, this does impact the height of the header.

An option for adjusting the height of the header and/or changing the font, would be to use custom design:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/

I made my banner 1440×600, just as all info for this them says. but when it loaded in the customizer, its was super zoomed in.

In Header Image, once you have selected an image, you should see a ‘Select and Crop button’ at the bottom. Did you move the edges of the cropping box out, to cover the whole image? Sometimes, the cropping box covers a smaller area of the image — which would then scale it when saved.

Is it one particular header image that looks zoomed or is it any you use?

I also need help on this, thanks.

In addition to my last post, the height of the header image will also change depending on the screen size too — it increases and decreases proportionally rather than staying at a fixed height.

As for the cropping question, when I the select and crop, the crop border was all way to the edges as I designed it with the recommended size in the theme description and information. And it’s any image I use, including the default ones

But what I think is concerning is that you are saying a flaw with options on a free theme affecting the appearance can only be fixed if we pay money for the Custom Design. This shouldn’t be on us to fix. The theme description does not say anything about the header being affected by options that can be turned on and off freely (i.e. The gravatar, Social menu, and Site Identity). It will only allow images that are 1440×600 or similar ratio, so we can’t make images to fit the new size due to turning off these base options. That a flaw in the program and design of the theme that either the creator or your company should fix, take off the ability to turn those options off, or take it off as free theme completely since the only way to make it work correctly is to pay money, thus making it not a free theme, but a de facto pay theme.

    Hi,

As for the cropping question, when I the select and crop, the crop border was all way to the edges as I designed it with the recommended size in the theme description and information.

Can you take a screenshot and upload it to your site? You don’t need to publish a post or page, just upload the file. From what I can see, the header image doesn’t appear zoomed, so I just want to double check what you are seeing.

But what I think is concerning is that you are saying a flaw with options on a free theme affecting the appearance can only be fixed if we pay money for the Custom Design.

I mentioned Custom Design as a way of making advanced customizations to your site — changing font options from what’s already available and height of the header image area falls into this category. It’s not something you have to do, but you will need to use it to change the appearance of your site beyond what the theme offers.

or take it off as free theme completely since the only way to make it work correctly is to pay money

The resizing header isn’t a bug, it’s just how the theme responds to having certain elements removed and adapting to different screen sizes.

This theme is free and the functionality included in the demo version and theme documentation is included.

Let me know when you’ve uploaded a screenshot and I’ll take a look.

@wdprescott – Did you add a transparent PNG as a gravatar as I suggested in my forum post here?

Since a screenshot is worth a thousand words, here are screenshots of my header tests in Independent Publisher: https://cloudup.com/cjlSAPJXT-a

-The left screenshot is with my current gravatar.
-The middle screenshot is after I selected not to display any gravatar in theme options
-The right screenshot is after I added a transparent PNG as an alternate gravatar and chose to display it.

@gemmacevans – for some reason this time there was no “zooming” of the header on my Private test site, which is still using Independent Publisher if you would like to see it. Warning: may cause severe need to hunt for dessert. :)

    Hi justjennifer,

Thanks for providing the screenshots. Using the .png for the gravatar works well — and you’re right, there’s no zooming.

    Now I want dessert :)

OK-in all fairness I overlooked what @wdprescott mentioned originally, which was that he added text to the header image. That wasn’t covered in my original screenshots so I’ve added it now.

Unfortunately it appears that the trick of adding a transparent PNG gravatar doesn’t solve the header height issue when using an image with text as a header and choosing not to display Site Title and Tagline, but choosing to display the transparent PNG gravatar. The header height is reduced regardless.

    Sorry for the oversight.

Here are screenshots of the whole progress

I’ve also save the header as the site header incase you want to see it how it works with varying screen sizes.

    Hi,

Thanks for the screenshots! I’m going to speak to our theme team about the zooming and get their thoughts. When I have an update, I’ll reply to you here.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again,

I’ve spoken to the team about ‘zooming’ header images on the Independent Publisher theme. They have confirmed that this is expected behaviour, not a bug.

The header is treating this image is a background image, adapting and scaling it in relation to the elements around it and the browser size. Therefore, abstract or decorative images will work best in the header area of this theme.

I still feel like this is something that should be mentioned in the theme description for this theme and any other possible themes that act similarly. I’ve been using WordPress for almost 10 years and never had a problem like this with any theme with a Customizable Header option. I would’ve avoid the theme had I know this is how the theme worked.

    Hi,

The theme description is something we could look at — so thanks for the feedback.

It’s a shame to hear the theme isn’t working out. There are lots to choose from if you decide you don’t want to continue using Independent Publisher for your site.

    Have a good day!
