Hello,
From what I heard from a few users, I should be able to buy a domain for $5/year. However, I cannot find the option to do that and seek your assistance! Thanks!

Hi there,
If you want to use a custom domain, you need to have a paid upgrade. Please choose the suitable plan for you in https://wordpress.com/plans/.
Each plan includes one free domain registration. Once you upgrade your plan, you can add a custom domain via https://wordpress.com/domains/add/.

In addition, the following support page should help you to know more about how a custom domain works on WordPress.com.

I’d like to follow on to this discussion and ask a question I am having. My wordpress website went down today, with a note saying the domain expired. Yet, my domain, which I have mapped from a GoDaddy domain, was renewed 2 days ago,
GoDaddy says according to them, everything is fine, and that I need to talk to WordPress.
We have had a free plan with WordPress for 5+ years, and just paid GoDaddy for the Domain. Has something changed at WordPress such that you now need to pay in order to have a mapped domain?
Further odd happenings, is that the expiry notice on WordPress is the exact day that I renewed the domain from GoDaddy – which really wasn’t set to expire until June. Hope someone can help.
