Changing main email to backup email (lost access to main email)
-
I set up my WP account years ago using my university email address, which is no longer functional. I can still access my WP account as I know the password thankfully, so I didn’t realise this was a problem until recently. However, I would like to be able to use my backup email address, which I still have access to, as my email address pertaining to this account. I have tried to change this to be my main email address, but in order to confirm the change it sends an email to my old university address, which presumably just bounces as the address doesn’t exist any more. Is there anything I can do about this? What is the point of having a backup email if you can’t use it when you don’t have access to the main email- ie, as a backup?

Hi there!
WordPress.com accounts can only be associated with one email address and we don’t have a “backup” email option. Are you instead trying to add a two factor recovery email address? If so, that’s likely the problem as the account owner (which is currently your university email) needs to verify that the two factor recovery email is valid and not someone trying to hijack your account.
If you just want to update your WordPress.com user account email address, the confirmation is sent to the new email, not the old one so if you don’t have access to the old email, I highly recommend changing the email address now. You can read more about how to change your email here:

Let us know if you still have trouble changing your email and we’ll be happy to help.
Cheers!
