Changing mapped domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

Lost entrepreneurshipeducation.com, which I had mapped to my WordPress blog (jeromekatz.wordpress.com). I still have entrepreneurshipeducation.info, and want to change the mapping upgrade I have on the WordPress account to point to it instead. I can’t find a help page with the specifics. I have replaced the nameservers at 1&1 (my domain registrar) with the ns1.wordpress.com (etc.) nameservers. And have an HTTP redirect in place. But having paid for a domain mapping at wordpress, I’d like to switch it to the new domain. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Thanks timethief, for adding the modlook tag and pointing me to the help link. Since I see “Unsubscribe from Topic”, I think I am subscribed.

    Hello Jerome –

I replaced the mapping for you with the .info domain. However, it does look like the DNS still needs to be changed to the WordPress nameservers:

    https://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/entrepreneurshipeducation.info

They’re still showing 1&1 as of now. Once the nameservers are changed, and the changed propagate, you can go back into WordPress.com/my-domains and set the .info domain as the primary domain for your site.

Thanks Bruce and timethief for the help. I changed the nameservers and can see it propagating. I’ve switched the .info to the primary. All looks good.
    Please consider this ticket closed.
    Again, thanks.

Bruce, one follow-up question. It looks like I got billed for a new domain mapping, when what I was trying to do was replace the entrepreneurshipeducation.com domain map with the .info URL. It is a minor thing, but I had about 3 months on the .com mapping. If it is possible, I am fine with having the duration of the .com mapping transferred over to the .info. If not, ok. Again, thanks. Jerry

    Hi Jerry –

Yes, the new mapping has the remainder of your former mapping tacked onto the end of it. Rather than expiring a year after the new mapping was made (10/16/16) it expires on 12/31/16 – which incorporates the remaining time you had left of on the .com mapping.

    Does that make sense?

    Sounds fine. Thanks. Jerry
