Changing MX Records
-
I have recently mapped my wordpress blog to a domain that I purchased from an external provider and wanted to know how to now re-direct my mail back to the email address I set up with them.
My site is http://www.worldwide45s.com and the email is (email visible only to moderators and staff). I have been told by my domain host that I needed to update the MX records to mx-cluster-d1.one.com and mx-cluster-d2.one.com. I followed the instructions at the wordpress email forwarding tutorial here – http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/ but couldn’t see the Manage Email option in my domain area.
After this I tried to update the DNS records through the domain manager but when I entered the new MX records I got a message saying that the records could not be updated as they didn’t match any of the DNS record formats.
Can anyone assist me here as I’m a little lost.
Thanks,
Lowell

Hi Lowell,
Adding custom DNS records can be a little tricky, so I’m happy to help. :) What you need is actually different from the Email Forwarding feature you found in our support pages. If you’re interested, you can find our guide for adding email service with another provider here: Add Email through other providers
I went ahead and updated the MX records to the ones your email provider gave you. It may take a few hours (sometimes a bit more) for that change to take effect, and then your email should start working. Please let me know if you have any questions. :)

Rachel, you are a star. Thank you so much. Hopefully this now works but i’m sure we’ll speak again, my next step is search engine optimisation which should be fun :)

Hi Lowell,
The two MX records you gave me are set up and working on your domain, so I’m not sure why your email isn’t working. (You can check your existing MX records under Store > Domains > Edit DNS in your dashboard. Here’s more info about that: Custom DNS)
If you’re using an email client on your computer (like Outlook or Apple Mail) you may need to contact your email service provider for additional details about setting that up. One way to check is to try logging in to your email provider’s webmail service (if they have one) and see if you can send and receive emails that way. If that’s working, then your email settings on your domain are correct and you just need to ask your email provider for the correct settings for your computer’s email client.
If your email provider needs you to add any other records in addition to the two MX records you have on your domain, just let me know and I can help you enter them on this end. :)
