Changing my domain name
-
Hi, I am thinking of changing my domain name and using one of the custom domain names that are available on wordpress.com. In this case, will a 301 redirect be automatic? I am a journalist and my website has been online for seven years now, so I would want to ensure that all the many links to my articles and pages that are on social media and elsewhere will still take people to the article or page in question. Many thanks, Annette

Hi there!
Hope you are doing great today.
Choosing a custom domain to get rid of .wordpress.com is just a simple upgrade. After choosing a custom domain, you just need to set it as a primary domain. Then all the traffic will be diverted to your primary domain automatically.
You can get more information about domains here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
Let me know if that helps!

Please check this as well: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
It may give you a clear idea.

Thanks. I did read those, but just wanted to be absolutely sure that I won’t need to do anything myself and that all the old links I have provided will come under the automatic redirect.

Hi there,
All links to the free WordPress.com URL will be automatically redirected to the custom domain, yes. The free URL will also still exist, but it won’t be visible to your site’s visitors.
